As a loyal reader of the author's blog, [...] , I needed to read this book as soon as it came out.
And I am so happy I did. I have read books by doctors about cancer, but it's rare to find an intelligent, practical, and informative book about this disease written by a layman.
The author has experience, but perhaps more importantly, knows how to express his ideas. I have benefited greatly from this book and I am sure others will as well. It's helpful to patients, families, and perhaps most importantly, for all others that hopefully will never experience this disease, but will be a lot more prepared if it should happen.

A special thank you to Langdon Street Press and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Howard Bressler’s The Layman’s Guide to Surviving Cancer provides a wealth of information, addressing the physical, emotional, dietary, holistic and spiritual aspects of cancer diagnosis!

His book, along with Bressler’s website, offers invaluable information for achieving a healthy body and mind for patients of cancer, the family, and those who desire a better understanding of issues surrounding this illness— an easy to read layman’s point of view format, versus boring medical jargon.

On a personal note, I received the devastating news of cancer, of both parents this past year. My mom, age 82 has colon cancer and secondary liver cancer, currently undergoing chemo. Dad, age 83 has Stage 1 chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Both parents had previously been very healthy, actively working out six days a week, fit, a healthy lifestyle, with normal checkups and no family history of cancer.

The news has been shocking—a roller coaster ride and ongoing journey with mom, being in and out of the hospital since receiving her news—surgery, colon resection, double pneumonia, blood transfusions, blockage, heart problems, lung and kidney infections, etc. (this was all prior to starting chemo).

After having her port installed (to receive her drip), she started on a combo of pills and drip, at a high dosage (Xeloda and Avastin). With several complications, her dosage of the pills has been reduced several times. She currently is managing her symptoms, and we hope for the best to reduce the cancer and manage her symptoms. We have been very fortunate with dad, as he does not require any treatment or medications at this time.

This book is so beautifully written, I can only imagine the impact that this book will have on cancer survivors as well as their families. It's a must read for anyone who wishes to understand the emotional toll the cancer journey takes on someone and to remind them that they are dealing with human beings and not just a cancer "diagnosis". Howard's often humorous tone adds light to a very dark topic as he provides a very valuable resource for cancer patients at all stages of their illnesses. A newly diagnosed patient can read it and anticipate what may lie ahead and a survivor recently discharged from care can read it and ease the hurdles they now may be encountering returning to a "post-cancer" life. A highly recommended read for anyone who has had cancer touch their lives in any way.

The Bresslers are dear friends of mine. When Howard introduced his book to me, I was unsure what to expect. Since our family has never dealt with this formidable disease, I was reading the book in order to hear Howard’s story. From the first page to the last, the entire book was inspirational. The texts were written in an intelligent way that’s easy for anyone to understand. At times, the stories were touching and emotional, and at times they were witty and funny. But most importantly, it was inspirational. The wisdom and knowledge he gained from going through his ordeal was passed on to benefit other cancer patients. To say, however, one need not have cancer to read this book may be a bit condescending. Yet I feel that the book is not just for cancer patients. I believe Howard has written a book within this book. It’s also a guidebook to help everyone how to best live life to the fullest. Whether, for example, he offers nutritional advice or philosophical advice, Howard’s suggestions are meaningful that they should be heard by everyone. I want to thank Howard for sharing his personal stories so that everyone can benefit from reading this wonderful book.

Howard Bressler’s The Layman’s Guide to Surviving Cancer is a must read/go to book for anyone who has had cancer touch their lives. It focuses on achieving a healthy body and mind, and also offers understanding and assistance to those involved in caring for a cancer patient. It is easy to read and is not bogged down in medical jargon.

My mother was diagnosed with bladder cancer at the age of 81, and we have been dealing with bladder removal surgery and the after effects for almost a year. As we continue with our ongoing journey, it helps to have insight into this insidious disease, as well as knowledge from another cancer patient and survivor. The Layman's Guide to Surviving Cancer: From Diagnosis Through Treatment has been an invaluable tool of reference.

Howard Bressler has first-hand knowledge of these issues, having survived leukemia. His book empowers you to tackle practical as well as legal issues, head on.

I highly recommend this well researched and insightful guide to navigating the rough waters of dealing with cancer.
