An African American ballerina takes a job at an elite boarding school only to find that the pristine campus contains just as much intrigue as the world of professional ballet: from aspiring dancers who will do anything to stand out to a dead body found in the campus lake, the school is full of mysteries on the brink of unraveling and characters who are not what they seem.

A gripping thriller populated by realistic characters that draw you in and keep you guessing, Dark Turns is a must-read. Holahan has crafted a believable world that is as idyllic as it is dangerous, and you'll find it's hard to put the book down! I definitely recommend this for anyone looking for a great read (although you may want to clear you schedule first!).

This is a murder mystery about ballet students and professionals written by someone who has both a masterful encyclopedic knowledge of ballet and clearly in every scene in the book bursts forth her shining love for the art of ballet dance. It's fun to read a book when the author really cares about the subject.

SYNOPSIS: It is set in a private boarding school. The school produces professional dancers somewhat like public universities produce professional football players. They are the pride and source of alumni donations, and are literally treated like 'prima donnas'. Nia Washington is a young professional dancer, nursing a broken heart and an sidelining injury, who takes a temporary job as a RA and a teaching assistant in dance. . On her very first day, she discovers a murder victim. The mystery unravels between students, revenge, secrets and a sweet romance with a fellow RA.

What I liked: The dance imagery and infighting was so detailed I felt I knew the characters and could predict who would be a witch to whom. The sweet romance between the two RAs was cute. The writing was paced, the clues were liberally sprinkled throughout the story, and honestly, I just enjoyed the read so much I slowed down to savor it.

What I didn't like: I thought Nia was way too easy. She had gone a year without any 'loving' then jumps in the sack with zero to little reasons/needs and she didn't equate sex with love. I also did not like her moral ambiguity. She gave no more thought to a grief stricken student's tearful confession than she gave to her breakfast. She did not empathize at all.

IMO: (SMALL SPOILER) I liked and didn't like aspects of the book.

Nia Washington is a talented ballerina who is taking a break by working at a posh private school while a foot injury heals. She certainly doesn't expect to find the body of a student in the lake when she is being given a tour of the campus.

Nia is a Resident Adviser in a girls' dorm and the assistant to the head ballet instructor. As she gets to know her ballet students, she starts to hear rumors about the dead girl. The boy who is being convicted by the court of popular opinion is staying in the dorm where Peter Andersen is the RA. Peter and Nia hit it off and begin dating. Nia is on the rebound from a relationship with another dancer who has decided that he wants her back.

As Nia investigates the young girl's death and the relationships among the students, she becomes suspicious of one of the students. Aubrey is used to being the star dancer. She also had a sexual relationship with the boy that was videoed and spread around the campus. She is jealous of a new dancer who wins the coveted lead in the next show. But somehow, despite not drinking, attends a party with her new best friend Aubrey, drinks too much, falls down a flight of stairs and breaks her ankle.

When Aubrey accuses Nia of sexting her, things reach an exciting conclusion. I was somewhat surprised at Aubrey's reasons because I had convinced myself that she was just evil and wasn't going to let anyone or anything stand in the way of her getting whatever she wanted. And, maybe that is still true. But there were extenuating circumstances that wind up putting Nia's life in danger.

This was an engaging mystery that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Nia Washington is an up and coming ballerina. But when she suffers a foot injury, she decides to take time off to help teach at a private school. But she discovers the body of a student in the lake by the school. As Nia works more with the students, she starts hearing rumors about the dead girl and decides to investigate. At the same time she also starts getting close to another advisor, Peter. But then Nia seems to be the target of the killer. Will she make it out alive?

Nia discovers the body of a student drowned so she is constantly in check with the police. But as she is around the students, she starts learning more about the happenings around the school. One girl, Aubrey seems to be willing to do whatever it takes to stay the head of her class. Then Nia seems to be the target of the killer.

I admit that I don’t really know much about ballet, but this book is descriptive enough to keep me fascinated. The mystery was interesting and filled with a really crazy girl. It is a really good story and I just had to keep reading to find out what happened next.

If you like good thrillers this is one that I recommend that you get. You will not be disappointed.

I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
