A holiday house party. A whole house full of suspects including a staff of former murders. An antiques dealer who likes beautiful things. And Agatha Troy to paint his portrait.

When a servant goes missing the head of household thinks he is stacking the deck in his favor by manipulating Troys husband Superintendent Alleyn to investigate. But once on the the job Alleyn is implacable. He must sift through the evidence and the misdirection till both the body and the killer are revealed. This one has a wow reveal and if you can figure out the killer before hand you are one clever reader. The only reason I was able to do it is I had read this as a teen and it came back to me as I read the book. Still the author is playing fair and you have everything you need to figure it out.

Typical of Marsh starts out with charm and ends with a punch. Golden age mystery indeed.

Troy is central to this Alleyn mystery, and that adds a lot. A household staffed with convicted murderers certainly
adds elements of suspense and uncertainty, plus the addition of a highly colorful host of a house party makes for
lots of movement. Marsh can almost make one nostalgic for things unknown personally, and this is a thoroughly
enjoyable murder romp. Once Roderick and Fox and the troops are on hand, we know all will be satisfactoryily
resolved.

An English country house, eccentric guests and staff, a snowstorm, a scarecrow, and a Druid. Of course, a murder is inevitable.

This is one of the series where Allyen's involvement is the result of Troy's. Not the most intricate plot, but with a neat twist, and some of the most outlandish characters from a writer known to people her books with unusual casts.
