Rise of the Dragons features some fairly common devices in fantasy these days: dragons (of course), a feisty female protagonist (once an exception, now more of a norm), a quest, and a coming of age story set against the backdrop of a desperate mission.

If you take these elements of formula fantasy genre writing and apply them here, outwardly the result sounds much like many other books. But the real test of a work that is different lies in what the author does with the characters, setting, and plot: how characterization is handled, how struggles are depicted, and - most importantly - how much a reader can relate to the various conflicts and influences of the protagonists.

Herein lies the opportunity for riches - and Rise of the Dragons succeeds in incorporating depth and an intriguing twist into a plot which could otherwise all too easily have been considered a too-predictible approach.

Now, many fantasies paint pictures of other worlds. The better ones immerse readers in those worlds - as Rise of the Dragons does from the start. It's difficult to paint an environment rich enough to actually feel the crunch of snow beneath one's feet, the unusual landscape of 'purple pine trees', and the efforts of a girl who 'never fit in' to accept not the domestic duties expected of girls, but the warrior powers she's inherited from her father Morgan Rice. But the saga succeeds - right from the start - in creating this all-important scene, juxtaposing Kyra's strengths and interests with the physical environment and social influences around her.

I have just finished reading this new Morgan Rice Book “The Rise of the Dragons” (Kings and Sorceres--Book 1 This is the first Morgan Rice Book I have read and I must say I was completely under her spell as she wove her story, like weaving a grand tapestry. Intersecting her story with threads of other lives. Young Kyra is a young motherless girl growing up in her fathers fort, her constant companion a wolf. She so wants to be a warrior, but it is forbidden for a female. I love how this story plays out, with glimpses of other lives, that we just know will eventually impact Kyra somehow. I am now awaiting the next book to see how this adventure plays out. Oh and did I mention the Dragon? No, well you must read this book.........

I have been a reader of Morgan's books for the entire sorceror's ring series. I am greatly disappointed with this book. It is so much of a sequel bait book that it is honestly insulting to the reader. The book itself is riddled with errors and mistakes. I can usually find one in the first sentence alone not to mention the entire page. The stories of Alec and the former mercenary are interesting but show no correspondence with the rest of the story and are left incomplete. The only saving grace is the at times very fluid imagery and wonderful word choice, but these add a tiny sparkle the the pile of feces this book turns out to be. Get an editor Morgan or at least proof your work. I am a high school student and I can pick out errors so easily from this book, you should be able to at least make the book presentable instead of rushing a book for a quick buck.

Poorly written, with no editor. The concept seems decent, but the story tends to repeat, and multiple characters who occupy entire chapters, never see a climax in this book. I understand that the author is trying to keep people coming back to get closure, but it's bad writing. The ending is abrupt, and most of what little tension she had built is lost in a single page. Of course, most people probably wouldn't get past chapter 3 before being overwhelmed by the elementary level writing.

Some useful tips for Ms. Rice:

1. Pronouns are a good thing, use them more often.

2. Use some creativity to get outside of the character's head. Tell a little more of the story instead of focusing so much on how respected or ignored the character feels. On that note...

3. We get it, it's important to all of your characters to be recognized. Saying it 3 times in each chapter is completely unnecessary.

4. Please, please, please, have someone proof your work before you subject innocent readers to it. They'll tell you that some things don't make sense, or that you missed words, or mixed up names, or maybe even that this entire story could not possibly take place in just two days, even if the people in Escalon never slept like some of them do in your book.

Having just seen the age and grade levels this book was written for, I must say, like the Aragon series, I wasn't able to put my Kindle down. I almost screamed in frfrustration when book #1 ended. Can't wait for book #2.
Having taken 3 years to finally reread all of The Wheel of Times books. I was surprised at how quickly I got absorbed in Rise of the Dragons. Morgan Rice is another consumate, enthralling writer, who makes you feel like your right there with Kyra and her dragon.
While I anxiously await the coming of book #2, I have now become caught up in The Scorcerers Ring series. HURRY, HURRY MORGAN RICE..... EXCELLENT READ

Just wanted to add a question... WHERE is book 2?
