First, I'm reviewing the book, not the movie as those above seem to be doing.
Zane Grey is hit and miss. I don't like Riders of the Purple Sage (which seems to be the book by him most people read first), but this is one of the great ones.
You really feel for the hero (and heroine) of the story and Grey really brings to life of freight haulers who made settling the west possible.

For comparison, I also really like Twin Sombreros and Knights of the Range (about Brazos Keene).

This is the story of the freight system that carried goods from St. Louis to Santa Fe, NM in the mid 19th Century, and the perils and dangers they faced as they crossed Indian country to deliver their merchandise. The hero, Buff Belmet, had to grow up fast after his mother and father are killed in Comanche raids. But aided by Kit Carson he delivers the goods over the trail. When he falls in love with May Bell, he encounters another enemy even worse than the Indians--Lee Murdock--who wants not only the girl for himself, but the valuable supplies. Fighting Caravans is an historical novel with real people who lived during the period who appear or are mentioned as the story line progresses. A fine read. These Walter J Black editions will last a life time, and can be read over and over and over.

I enjoyed getting into an oater frame of mind and I enjoyed Zane Gray's use of language - which gave me a feel for the western frontier in the 1800's. I also learned a lot about the role "freighters" had in settling the west. And I appreciated that there was a somewhat balanced view in terms of the "white man" not keeping his word. This story was replete with old-fashioned values - and that was also refreshing.

I enjoyed the history and the excitement as well as the culture of our country in the 1850-1870's I loved the romance of the main characters and the men who helped form him. I understood the trials and disappointments they went through to finally be together.

Nobody does it better than Zane Grey. He always had it nailed, classic value always. The vivid concrete descriptions of the early West and its environmental features are of great value to the reader. I recommend reading everything he ever wrote.

Great book, seems historically accurate. One of the best old west books I have ever read it gets to be just a little of a love story at one point though. Otherwise great book.
