I got this book for one of my twin 6.5 year old daughters who are in first grade, the one that is totally into dragons and dinosaurs and has even talked about being a paleontologist. She LOVED it! She does read quite a bit above her grade level, so she can handle everything in it, and because of her age all the pictures and all the information is really attention keeping for her. She started dragging it with her school, taking it in the car with her when ever we were going to be driving for more than 10 minutes, it was about as popular with her as the Dragonology book. I also like that this book is not at all slanted for one gender or another, lots of dinosaur books we see seem really geared for boys, this is nice and neutral, a little like a young person's text or reference book. I had read some other reviews that said it was a tough book because it is too wordy and long for little ones but the pictures make too young for older ones. I guess for my daughter this book was a perfect fit. I can see where if a young child is not reading at the level my daughter is (her twin sister is only at grade level and I know she could not handle the words in this book and the length would discourage her from continuing to try) that this book would not work, since I do not have older children I cannot say if it would seem to young for them. Anyway, all I can say is this book was a BIG hit with my daughter.

I'm going to be right up front about being the mother of a real dinosaur hunter. I got Lonely Planet Not For Parents How to be a Dinosaur Hunter so the daughter of a dinosaur hunter would learn what her father did on dinosaur hunts. She really liked the book when she sat down to read it. She liked both the illustrations and the text and now has a better understanding of her father's activities.

I think the book is well done. The illustrations are delightful and appropriate for kids and the text is expanatory without being too dense. Even an adult reading the text of the book would definitely learn a lot about dinosaurs and dinosaur hunting. The book discusses various species of dinosaurs, where they were located, and the eras in which the various dinosaurs lived and died. It also describes how their bones are found and how the finds are excavated.

Even though the book is Not For Parents, I found it to be a very enjoyable book. Because it is not strictly sequential, a reader can pick the book up, start reading at almost any point and spend some enjoyable time. I recommend this book.

I think I have read almost every travel book 'The Lonely Planet' has written, that is their forte. They have now branched out into 'Not For Parents' books for children. This book reveals everything young explorers need to know about how to become a famous dinosaur hunter.

This book will teach parents and children how to recognize dinosaurs, and how to identify their remains. The book is full of short vignettes that give information about dinosaurs. There is a great deal of information about prehistoric creatures. Lots of facts, fun and otherwise. We learn where in the world the dinosaurs can be found. The actual names of the dinosaurs are given, and what a treat that is for the parents to pronounce!

The writing is at a level that children over the age of 8 and parents can enjoy. The illustrations are gorgeous. Everything you think a dinosaur should look like and more. For the more adventurous child and parent, and for the child who likes to learn. This is a must book. I liked it as much as my grandson.

My daughter (8) loves dinosaurs and has read and owns many books about them. She liked this one because it has a lot of information in it. On the downside, the information is all jumbled up and in pop-up windows. It does not read easily becaue there is no flow of information and it is hard to go back and find anything particular because it is not organized very well. Also, the graphics are not up to par with many of the dinosaur encyclopedias that are available (which have much of the same information).

This is a decent dinosaur book. It teaches about fossils, rock layers, the different periods in which dinosaurs lived...as well as some others...so it offers plenty. I would not buy it as a first or only dinosaur book though because it is not as accessible as other books like any encyclopedia of dinosaurs or 1000 Facts type books.

This is a cool book for a young person who is interested in dinosaurs but ready to dig a little deeper. Every page has colorful line drawings illustrating the narrative. The book focuses on searching for dinosaurs and how to be a paleontologist. Topics covered are the tools used in the search, famous paleontologists, what the world looked like in various eras (for example the Triassic), and digging in various locales (like Australia). This is not an "encyclopedia" of dinosaurs but rather a "field guide" to becoming a paleontologist. I recommend it for an older child or early teen who is interested in learning about paleontology as a career.

This book is as entertaining for adults as it is for youngsters in that is concentrates on some history, some places where dinosaurs have been excavated, a lot of scientific data reduced to readable fashion, and a lot of humor in the manner that this book is meant to guide children on finding and learning about dinosaurs.

The various font styles and varying forms of illustration make the pages crowded so this is not a book to sit down and read cover to cover. This is a diversion which when taken chapter by chapter treats kids like adventurers - providing as much entertainment as it does significant data. It may no work for very young children, but for those in the 9 to 13 age groups the book will undoubtedly entertain and become a favorite. Grady Harp, October 13
