What a relief to finally see a thoughtful, easy-to-read discussion of the newest movement in pornography. Anne Sabo's "After Pornified" is a well-researched and multifaceted exploration of what I hope will be a historic moment in the history of cinema.

Full disclosure: I'm one of the filmmakers that Sabo discusses in her book. Because the topic is dear to my heart, I've read literally hundreds of articles and dissertations dealing with pornography, and this one is unique and particularly modern in its focus.

Her choice of filmmakers to focus on is pleasantly surprising. She interviews world-famous figures like Candida Royalle and Tristan Taormino alongside filmmakers who have achieved acclaim in their own countries but who are still well-kept secrets elsewhere, like Murielle Scherre (Belgium) and Sophie Bramly (France). Also appealing is Sabo's mix of traditions: While all of these filmmakers are making purposefully arousing films, some women come from an unapologetic porn tradition (like Anna Span), some from a political/activist tradition (the Swedish "Dirty Diaries" feminist project) and some from the artfilm world (Eva Midgley).

A few of the things I especially appreciate about Sabo's approach:

- She's thoughtful about the issue of terminology: Are these new films best called "porn"? "Porn for women"? "Alternative pornography"? "Explicit erotic film"? "Adult cinema"? She points out that each of us filmmakers chooses our own terms, but that other factors (like distribution access) play a big role.

You may find that there may in fact be some porn you do like. This book opened my eyes to a genre I did not know existed. And it helped me see why I did not like what I now know is "mainstream porn."
Yes, Ms. Sabo's work is important for the cultural reasons that other reviewers have articulated, but the book is also practical. I can read descriptions of films and filmmakers to discover what interests me. I can avoid those that do not. I can consult a thorough appendix for additional resources. Thank you, Anne, for a valuable reference, as well as an interesting read!

Come on folks, birds do it. Bees do it. (ahem, your teenagers are doing it.) Let's all have some more fun with it. It might take a shift in thinking before you get the concept and importance of this book and feminist porn in general but it's worth it. Women all over the world are taking hold of their lives and that includes their sex lives. Porn is a multimillion dollar industry and it ain't going away. It's time to reinvent the medium to one that empowers women and updates attitudes. It's already happening and you probably didn't even know it. Consider Ms. Sabo's book a primer to all styles of sexy, powerful and feminist film making. It offers history as well as contemporary interviews with international industry ground breakers. Reviews of this new style of erotica are helpful to anyone wondering what it looks like. Buy it. Read it. Then go have some good dirty fun.

Anne Sabo has written what will be, at least for the next several years, the definitive work on feminist pornography. Both scholarly and accessible, After Pornified frames the contemporary debate -- and the rapidly evolving world of women-centered, women-created erotica -- in terms that are ideal for both students and casual readers.

If we want to understand the full complexity of porn culture, and we should want to, Sabo's text is an excellent start. I'll be using it in my "Navigating Pornography" course at Pasadena City College in the spring of 2013.

I was pleased to learn in this book that there's a middle ground between sappy sentimental porn aimed at women and hardcore porn that is created for men. After Pornified and the work it describes recognize that women are sexual as well as romantic.

After Pornified is about how porn can have a positive, empowering effect on people.

In her book, Anne G. Sabo makes an excellent argument for pornography. Not just any porn, but re-envisioned pornography. The word re-envisioned here emphasises the radical and revolutionary changes that have taken place in pornography - specifically pornography being made by women.

Sabo substantiates her positive stance on pornography by thoroughly introducing leading female porn directors and their work, describing scenes from each director (from pioneer Candida Royalle, to contemporaries like Erika Lust and Jennifer Lyon Bell). Sabo describes scenes from each director in great detail and follows up with a good discussion around what had occurred and highlights what is important in the scene. She tackles all topics ranging from the non-objectifying gaze to liberating role-play.

Sabo is especially attentive of how these re-envisioned are made. She points out the importance of camera angles, lighting and music in adding to the quality of the film. Its nice to see an emphasis on ethical film making as well as quality film making skills when describing a film as re-envisioned porn.
