The Zodiac Paradox is the first prequel novel in the Fringe trilogy. It takes place during the late sixties and early seventies and gives us a look at this author's vision of Walter Bishop, William Bell, and Nina Sharp as they were years before the events of the television series take place.

The story begins with Walter and William performing an experiment with a drug formula which readers will learn is to become cortexiphan, the drug which plays a major role in later fringe events of the television series. This experiment causes a gate to open to an alternate universe and allows the Zodiac killer to cross into our world. As a killer pulled from his own world into ours with some unusual abilities involving radiation, the Zodiac is worthy of the Fringe canon. However, the Zodiac character is never really developed past some of the steroetypes we would expect of a serial killer. Unfortunately, our three heroes share this lack of development.

*** THREE STARS! For fans of the television series, the most noticeable flaw will be seeing Walter with a personality that more closely resembles his post brain tissue removal than the cold and arrogant scientist we saw during flashbacks in the series. The overall story is engaging enough, and there are many recognizable references to the television series, but some of those references seem contrived or at least irrelevant to the story. ***

As a Fringe story, this books works pretty well but as a novel taken on its own merits it's fairly average.

If you're a fan of the show (and you'd have to be to have any interest in this book at all), the main thing you'll be interested in is the portrayal of Walter Bishop. I can say for certain that Faust's characterization of Walter is very much in line with what you saw in the TV series. For most fans, this will be a welcome relief and an enjoyable aspect of the book. But part of me wishes that the author took more liberties with Walter's youth. Everyone changes as they mature, but in this book Walter in his late twenties is pretty much exactly the same as Walter in his sixties (even the way he dresses).

The story does often feel like an overlong standalone episode of the series (in both good ways and bad). It's a good concept, and one that fits into the Fringe lore.

But a great concept needs great execution, and this book has a few issues. These supposedly genius-level characters often do fairly stupid things, and although Nina comes off as the "sharpest" of the bunch, she and William Bell are still lacking the cunning minds we came to know in the series. Also, the author does a little too much description for my tastes. She often delves into long descriptions of minutiae about side characters who barely appear for a few pages, and places that are just briefly visited. I'm don't mind descriptive, rich world-building, but sometimes it should be done with a light touch so the main story can flow. Far too often, the descriptions got in the way of the story and I found myself fighting the urge to skip over paragraphs. But, I'll readily admit this is a matter of reading taste and others may find this style to their liking.Read more ›

As an avid fan of the series I always wanted to know more about Walter and Bell before we met them and in this new novel, The Zodiac Paradox, we are treated to their early years and the things that are often left "in the back." Well, now you won't have to fill in the blanks because this novel explains quite a bit about how Bell and Nina became involved, how Cortexiphan was created, and even a little bit about Velvet Sedan Chair. We also discover the method in which Walter and Bell first encountered Over There (not how one might think) and the real root of Fringe Division.

As a novel it can be easily read by Fringers, newbies, and someone who has never seen the show before (it doesn't demand inside knowledge) which is kind of nice and it deals with a relatively well known topic - The Zodiac Killer. Granted, it's a fictional account of his horrific crimes it does make for a fascinating read and holds your interest long after you have been brought in on the "fringe event."

The only real downside to the novel is the drug related content, but if you don't mind that and have seen the series (Walter was always on something) it won't bother you too much. This is more of a warning for curious parties who want to let someone under the age of sixteen or seventeen read this than anything else.

In conclusion, I am excited to read the next two in the series - The Burning Man (Olivia-centric) and Sins of the Father (Peter-centric) and discover even more about the mysterious events that lead up to the first episode of the series and what lurks behind the shadows.

In this book, you get to know about how Bell and Walter came up with Cortexiphan, alternate universe thing, and forming a triangle to open a gateway to the other side. This book also explains relationship between Bell and Nina. For those who curious about the Violet Sedan Chair, you see some bonding between them and Walter - they even let Walter borrow their place for some operations!
