Perhaps because it is larger than the small lined journals in the Monsieur series, the leather cover on this one is already a bit more flexible and softened - though still will take time or active conditioning to get it to lay flat. Takes Sharpie Extra Fine ink without bleed, and I find the 6mm spacing between the lines just right.

The 192 pages are separated into six sown bundles, which is the hallmark of the Smyth Sewn binding style. This particular binding is the most desirable for "Library Tome" editions as once the leather cover does soften enough, it will allow the journal to lie flat without binding cracking or causing seam damage.

I am pleased to see "Green" is also offered as a color and have added both the A5 (Medium) and A6 (Small) page-ruled in green to my future purchasing wish list, the sample quality impressing me enough to be a continuing customer.

- Complimentary product provided for evaluation, yet my thinking here reflects all my personal purchasing decision processes, and hopefully may help clarify if this best meets your own needs and expectations.

When I was very young I would accompany my mother to an old branch library in a decaying section of town where we would browse the section where original volumes and historic manuscripts were kept. If was generally off-limits to the public but my mother, a voracious reader, was on special terms with the librarian.

I recall the musty smell of those old books, warmed by the steam radiators in the cold depths of winter. That smell was resurrected in me today when, on a hot summer day, I receive a set of sample notebooks from Monsieur.

As an author, and the offspring of an author, real books hold a special fascination for me. Sorry Kindle, I love your convenience and I do use your service, but a leather-bound book will always have the power to take me to places an electronic device never will.

So it was when I was asked to write an article about Monsieur and their selection of real leather notebooks that I agreed to review them as well on Amazon. These are traditional blank notebooks, once very popular but now more often replaced with the expediency of a smartphone. They are crafted in England, using old-school methods and as you would expect, are made of real leather, with a high grade of non-acid paper that takes well to a nib pen, as well as a ballpoint or even a Sharpie.

The concept of a notebook in the 21st Century is not as archaic as it seems. These are priced affordably to make them reasonable to use for everyday dairies, recipes, address books or the youthful scribblings of a budding artist. In fact the possibilities are limited only by the imagination, unlike electronic media they will be there next week, next year or for the next generation.Read more ›

I really like this journal – you not only have a leather cover, but the paper is really heavy and thick and makes it appear to be handmade. While the leather is fairly stiff after opening up from the pack, after using this (and their other journals in different colors) for about three months now the leather is starting to soften up due to the natural oils from my hands.

If you are looking for a journal that has character and doesn’t look like something from Ampad, I would recommend this one for yourself or as a gift.
