I might sum up this book as a map of the patterns of subconscious denial by gentrifying residents of the displacing effects of their actions. A good deal of focus is on the commandeering of public space (both directly and indirectly) and the institutionalizing of the gentrifying class as legitimate civic leaders of otherwise diverse communities. In particular, I found the exploration of the gulf between how gentrifying and working-class populations define "diversity" to be insightful. In some ways, I read this as a cautionary manual for gentrifiers of things not to do in their adopted neighborhoods. In that sense, "Good Neighbors" is the flip side of Sulieman Osman's book "The Invention of Brownstone Brooklyn," which in many ways valorizes the actions of four decades of the gentrifiers of northwest Brooklyn, even while acknowledging the displacing effect of their expanded presence. Folks like me will see themselves in both books, and learn something from each.

I did, however, feel that Ms. Tissot's narrative was a bit overlong, not delivering as much of a revelation as I might have hoped from the amount of time invested in plowing through her prose. While her first-person research was extremely perceptive, I also found her obvious disdain for her subjects to be somewhat unattractive and lending of a judgmental quality to the work.
