Ian Gardner, co-author of Tonight We Die as Men, returns with his second work on the exploits of the 3d Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division in World War II. The result of meticulous research and more than seventy interviews with veterans and civilians caught up in the fighting, Deliver Us from Darkness begins where his earlier book ended. As in his earlier work, while there are references to strategic and operational moves, the book is primarily concerned with combat actions at the battalion and lower levels.
Gardner enhances his intriguing tale by weaving together descriptions of the terrain in Holland, the dispositions of the German forces, the organization of the Dutch Resistance movements, and the strategic situation in 1944. These elements form the backdrop for the heart of the book.
Gardner personalizes his book by frequent emphasis on the contribution of some truly brave Dutch men and women, who willingly care for wounded Soldiers, risk their lives to gather information on German troop movements and participate in some of the heaviest combat actions. The text is amply supplemented with six detailed maps and over 200 photographs.
The book opens as the battalion returns to England after fighting in Normandy. There the battalion retrains and refits. Then with little advanced notice the division parachutes into Holland in Operation Market Garden. The objective of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) was to capture four crucial bridges over the river Dommel. Third battalion, led by Major Oliver Horton, spearheaded the advance on September 18, 1944, taking heavy casualties along the way at Vlokhoven and Woensel. Upon entering Eindhoven, the first Dutch city liberated, thousands of people spilled onto the streets to embrace the paratroopers.

This picks up with the story of the 3rd Bn of the 506 Parachute Infantry Regiment during the Market Garden campaign in September of 1944. As with the first book, it's full of interesting first hand accounts from interviews with veterans of the campaign. The various units and participants tend to blur after a while and I found myself ignoring specific unit names because I wouldn't remember them anyway. If you're a fan of similar books written by authors such as Stephen Ambrose you'll likely enjoy this book.

Once again Ian Gardner delivers an excellent historical and human account of the sacrifice and dedication of the men who served in the 3rd Battalion, 506PIR, of the 101st Airborne during World War II. In Mr. Gardner's first book, Tonight We Die As Men: The untold story of Third Battalion 506 Parachute Infantry Regiment from Toccoa to D-Day (General Military), we met the 3rd Battalion and followed them across the channel on that day of days when they jumped behind enemy lines to secure bridges, roads and other strategic points. Now in "Deliver Us from Darkness" we join the 3rd Battalion once again they make a daring daytime jump right into the heart of Nazi occupied Holland. Mr. Gardner puts us in direct contact with the veterans themselves via interviews, letters and photographs. Additionally we are given insight into those who the 101st liberated after years of Nazi domination in the same manner. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the 101st. While it is not required to read the books in order to understand what is happening, I would suggest it if possible, simply to get a feel for what these soldiers went through in such a relatively short amount of time. I personally hope that Mr Gardner continues with a third book covering the 3rd Battalion from the Battle of the Bulge to the end of the war.

Cheers Mr. Gardner - Well done. And Cheers to all the men of the 101st past and present.

I've been fascinated with the Market Garden operation of WWII for several years. That interest and the excellent D Day book of Ian Gardner resulted in much excitement for this book. I was not disappointed. First, there are dozens of amazing pictures, the WWII paratrooper reader will feel spoiled with all the amazing photos. Then there is the excellent and detailed retelling of the invasion, liberation, battles, and defense of the Netherlands. Gardner interviewed many eye-witnesses from the Dutch perspective and paired that with often overlooked or not understood re-telling of the hardships and brutality of the Nazi regime that dominated the Dutch until the paratroopers (and ground forces eventually)pushed out the Nazis. Gardner helped me understand the complexity of this operation with his description of the 'defensive' patrols and positions. I wish OMG would have worked as it's not hard to imagine a different post-war Europe if the war ended prior to the Red Army marching into Berlin.

While the thread of the story is difficult to follow at times, the individual action reports are interesting and strongly told. The stories of the Dutch Underground and their resistance during the Occupation as well as their aid to the Allies are worth a second standalone book. They truly aided in their own delivery as this book makes clear.

Most of Operation Market Garden is told from the British point of view but this tells the American side. A little confusing as story tellers change, overall very good personal accounts of the long campaign.
