Summary: This book explains each feature in details. It is a good reference book if you want to find a specific feature. It is not "step-by-step" or "project-based" book. I would suggest first glance through the table content to have a high-level understanding, and read in detail for particular feature. I give it a 3 stars because it does provide details information on each feature. If you know what feature you want to use, this book is quite useful. I don't give it a 4 or 5 stars because it is not "brain" friendly.

Pros: Explains each feature / API in details. Each explanation comes with a JSON sample. It can be used as a comprehensive reference book.

Cons: Lack of graph / chart / diagram to illustrate the concept (I am a visual guy). It's hard to study a dictionary. ElasticSearch exposes a lot of configuration options to users in the form of JSON (JSON is a new XML :). This book too focus on JSON / API, even the sample code is just a bunch of JSON. For example on "Chapter 8: Administrating Your Cluster", instead of showing us available tools, this book show us all the details of low-level JSON API. This book is dry.

This book is a very detailed reference book. As it often happens when engineers write books, there are lots of details, copy-pasted from specification. But when it comes to explaining principles, the authors start to, well, stumble a little. They misuse words, sentences become short and vague, as if the authors have no time to discuss such things. Some basic ideas are mentioned but never clearly explained. It leaves some mess in the head, instead of the clear picture. Definitive Guide is way better, not because it is thicker, but because only from there I finally understood what exactly the author of this book meant.

Many of the reviewers gave this book a high rating as a good reference and good read. I don't agree. I tried to work through the section(s) on queries to better understand how to query my index to get the results I desire. I found myself repeatedly going to the free, "definitive guide" on the Elasticsearch website when I would see something mentioned in the book and then no readily found explanation.

Example: "The Boolean match query is a query that analyzes the provided text and makes a Boolean query out of it." What is a Boolean query? With a lot of searching, I find an explanation under the "Compound Queries" section.

Example: "A match_phrase query is similar to the Boolean query, but instead of constructing the Boolean clauses from the analyzed text, it constructs the phrase query." What is a phrase query? I couldn't find it in the book. After a quick search on the Elasticsearch website, I find something clearer: "For a document to be considered a match for the phrase 'quick brown fox,' the following must be true:

"- quick, brown, and fox must all appear in the field.
"- The position of brown must be 1 greater than the position of quick.
"- The position of fox must be 2 greater than the position of quick."

It's probably the best book ever written about Elasticsearch.
Chapter 3 (Searching Your Data) is so clear and complete even a total newbie can use it, and together with Chapters 4 and 5 you can really improve your Search stuff.
The only BIG thing that could be better explained is the Percolator, I suggest you to read also the Elasticsearch post about the last improvements on it.

95% of the book is Dev oriented. There are very few chapters at the end of it Ops oriented.

Got the book mainly cause of Ops looking tasks, initial basic setup, snapshoting and health status monitoring are explained good, but it lacks info about scaling and deeper production tuning.

Could be written in half the number of pages it is, there are query examples 10 pages long, in fact half the book is few line explanation and then result from a query spread on multiple pages.

This is definitely an easy to read book for ElasticSearch. It's focus is on giving a complete elastcisearch reference for both beginning and intermediate ElasticSearch users. The author has a lot of references to the his other book Mastering Elasticsearch which I don't have a copy and can't comment. For advance users, I would recommend using the Elasticsearch.org reference.

I have both the first and second edition of this book. For the second edition, it includes all the latest features for elasticsearch 1.0. I especially like the chapter 7 Elasticsearch Cluster in Details. It talks about the elasticsearch clustering in details and gives cluster tuning guidelines. This is extremely useful for any production deployment. It will be great if some real life examples are included in this section as well.

If you are new to Elasticsearch, the best way to learn is to download a copy and try out with a few online tutorials. Once the basic concepts are there, reading this book will help tremendously.

This book is an excellent read for both beginning and experienced ElasticSearch Users.
It goes into detail about what ElasticSearch is, how it works and setting it up in a single or clustered environment.

The book covers the different APIs available and explains some of the best practices for architecting and searching your data.
It also explains some more complex topics such as extending your index structures to handle data that isn't flat, index aliasing and detecting the language of documents.

The one thing I found missing was securing ElasticSearch clusters but it seems in general this is something that is a shortcoming with the ElasticSearch product as a whole so I can't take away from this author for not covering it.
