This series of novels and printed out comic strip books are the best spy type adventures period. The development of all the main characters is great as are the interactions among them. The plots are very well done. I own all the books and read them over and over. Don't judge the books by the incredibly lame movie that was made. The books are amazing. If James Bond were real - he would read them for tips.

Modesty had a good, long run in the dailies - 1963 to 2001, nearly forty years. Unfortunately, the most recent of those years now lies a decade behind us. I'm grateful for these beautiful reprints, with their crisp lines, solid blacks, and opaque stock.

These story lines date from mid-career for Modesty and her loyal Garvin, 1974-5 (panels 3310 to 3368, for the fanatic). The first of three, "Take me to your Leader," a complex scam intended to save the human race from itself. Of course, with such lofty goals, the sacrifice of Modesty and Willy barely tips the scales. But, as you expect, the two energetically and effectively object to their sacrifice, and win as you'd expect. Next, in "Highland Witch," Modesty's fishing trip is rudely interrupted by a body floating downstream - a live one, this time, the first step toward breaking up another criminal enterprise, this time with some selective haunting. The collection ends with the title story, "Cry Wolf," standard Cold War fare involving the KGB, secret codes, and of course Modesty.

Modesty led the way toward many of today's adventure heroines - and toward some of today's more flexible kinds of friendships between men and women. Although each would give their own life for the other out of personal loyalty, they never became romantically involved. In fact, each rather enjoyed seeing the other bundle off with a new subject of affection - as a friend seeing someone making a friend happy. As a result, this gives the comics a somewhat nostalgic look. There's the 70s' sideburns, hair, and kohl eyes, to be sure, but also that carefree spirit that came after The Pill but before AIDS and drug-resistant bacteria. Not just good aventure in themselves, these stories offer a look into the social attitudes of a past that some of us still remember.
