The core of this book consists of edited transcriptions of oral interviews of former Red Air Force WW2 fighter pilots. All are extremely informative and interesting, with the interview of Nikolai G. Golodnikov of the Northern Red Banner Fleet Air Arm standing out above the others due to his detailed descriptions of various British and American fighters flown by Soviet pilots as well as comparisons of those fighters with their German opponents. Detailed coverage of Red Air Force units is focused on the following fighter regiments: 29th (1st Guards), 131st (40th Guards), 144th (19th Guards), and 147th (20th Guards). Aircraft types most frequently mentioned include: I-16, IL-2 and Pe-2 (mostly in the context of fighter pilot experiences escorting both types of ground attack aircraft), MiG-3, LaGG-3, La-5, and P-39 Airacobra. Best account of WW2 Soviet fighter pilots in action that I have read to date. Highly recommended.

This title gives accounts from several Soviet fighter pilots in World War II. The accounts give plenty of personal insight into the air war, including tales of dogfights, crash-landings, capture and escape. But it also gives information on technical aspects of World War air warfare on the Eastern Front. The accounts are all from fighter pilots. Many offer their own views of their planes' weaknesses and strengths as compared with German counterparts. Some of the best information concerns western planes supplied through Lend-Lease. You will find background not just on Soviet-built aircraft like the I-16, MiG-3, Yak-9, La-5FN, and LaGG-3. You will also learn what it was like to fly Hurricanes, P-40s, and P-39 Airacobras, and how these planes matched up against the Germans.

Any would-be "experts" should remember that the air war on the Eastern front differed sharply from that in the west. Combat was often at low and medium altitudes, where poorly-regarded fighters like the P-40 and Airacobra could - and did - frequently out-perform the doughty Bf-109G and FW-190A.

My one complaint is that there should be a map or two to help the reader locate the rather obscure place-names for airbases and other points of interest. The one map provided gives little information, and is inaccurate in at least one important respect. Nonetheless, if you have a taste for the often-ignored but fascinating air war in Russia, this title is a "must-read."

First person accounts from those veterans who were in the thick of battle. Early war accounts from the Russian view made the book even more interesting.
