My children and I recently finished Missionary Stories on Safari - and, oh! what a wonderful trip we took! We were amazed by the incredible experiences missionaries Lorna and Betty had. We laughed uproariously at the many hilarious tales, giggled at their sense of humour and marvelled at their incredible bravery and commitment to sharing the sweet word of God with those who had never heard. We learnt about how they built schools, nursed children, taught men, despite protesting fiercely, and loved the Masaai and other people groups of Kenya. Today Lorna and Betty are in their 80s, but they continue to serve the Lord in their retirement in Hermanus, South Africa - praying for the many in need and serving Jesus each and every day. This is a book I recommend for everyone. It's written in an easily accessible manner that is easy enough for a grade 4 reading level child to read alone.

I laughed my way through this book! Lorna Eglin is a superb storyteller and does she have stories to tell! She was a missionary in Kenya for many years and in this book she recounts some of her adventures, most of which revolve around road trips. This is more of a book to read for fun than a book to read for spiritual lessons, though she weaves some in to many of the stories and does so in ways that are sometimes striking.

I appreciated the fact that she did not present herself as wonder woman doing all these amazing things, but as someone that needed God’s help to get her out of scrape after scrape. Maybe some of the scrapes were her own fault, but it was encouraging to see God have mercy on her and take care of her because that is so often where we find ourselves. It also strengthens one’s faith to see how God met her needs in ways that only he could orchestrate.

The author was an intrepid woman with an unbelievable optimism which seems to have fitted her perfectly for what God had her doing there in Kenya. You don’t learn a whole lot about her work, it is mostly an adventure story, and while there is certainly more to missions than what you read in this book, there is not usually less and it is good to have this side of the story as well.

One thing that may be helpful to be aware of is that the author occasionally refers to herself as preaching in a church. She does not seem to be an ordained pastor, someone else, for example, does the baptisms, but she does sometimes deliver the sermon. It is far from the focal point of the book, but it crops up occasionally.

All in all I found it a compelling book. I started reading it just to get an idea of what the kids would be reading, but I finished it because I couldn’t help myself! And, most importantly, I have found myself remembering and being encouraged by what God did for her as I am faced with my own difficulties.
