This is the true story of 17 years in the life of a man called Sly. We learn little about him other than that he is British, married to a Thai, and living and working in Bangkok until he is arrested at a bank one day while waiting to meet a client and charged with buying and possessing heroin. Despite the lack of any proper evidence, he is eventually sentenced to death. If this sounds unlikely, given that his only mistake seems to have been - in his own words - to be a `sucker for the underdog' as well as showing - in hindsight at least - a touch of naivety, believe me, there is a terrifying whiff of authenticity about this tale, and Sly is a compelling, straight-talking narrator, despite the dodgy past he occasionally alludes to. Even worse, the friend who was arrested with him and who spent more than five years in jail beside him, committed no crime other than being with Sly on the day of the arrest to go apartment-hunting with him.

As Sly fights for justice, he witnesses brutality and uncovers tales of treachery and abuse that are far more horrifying than his own. He pleads for the reform of the Thai judicial system, one which even high-ranking figures have admitted is corrupt, and is equally scathing in his accounts of the behaviour of the British government of the time as it shouts about world-wide human rights abuses.

Sly is a born storyteller, and the characters simply jump out of the pages with life. This may not be a pleasant read, but it is an engrossing one. Whether we actually like Sly or not, I think most of us will be relieved that he survived the system, and can only admire his matter-of-fact account of a horrifying existence.

This story was highly exaggerated, living in Thailand I can see much of this was made up. The storyline had many holes and was just not believable. For anyone who has lived in Thailand, you can see that many parts just didn't add up. Other books out there with more accurate stories. Waste of money and time, I threw the book out halfway through.

I enjoyed this book as a narrative, but think it lacked realism. Decent story, but I don't believe it was true. The author did not even spell the name of the prison correctly.

This book was a good read. I finished it in two days. Very interesting to read about prison life abroad. I can't even imagine going through what these inmates do. Read this book with an open mind and a trust for the author because so much of this seems so unreal. I am amazed that things like this still happen across the world.
