Jean-Baptiste Barres enrolled in 1804, and served in the various regiments through 'til the 1830s. His text is well written, and easy going (I read it on the train - my destination always arrived too soon). It's amazing to think that you're reading the words written by a soldier who served, first hand in some of the battles under Napoleon (who Barres saw on several occasions). In a way I wish that there was more first-hand accounts of the battles - we can only imagine what they were like - but in one battle (Austerlitz, I think) Barres wrote that he was in reserve; in another they walked in thick mud, so thick he took his boots off for fear of losing them. That's reality, not Hollywood.

As a final piece, he covers the 1830 revolution in Paris (when the Bourbons were deposed for the Orleans).

Just wonderful. Quite a find, in short.

The book reads well,it concetrate on Chasseur Barres life under the Army during the Napoleonic Era,it is an interesting insight point of view from a man that lived during that time, the diary was kept almost day by day,so it is fascinating to go back in time and mentally picture his stories.
The only note is that you need to be aware of the facts so to be able to understand it well and enjoy the insight, otherwise it could be a bit boring.

Another great memoir of a French soldier in Napoleon's Imperial Guard. Written in a journal format (his father told him to keep one and what a good decision that was!) he describes life and the effects of war on both himself and the area around him. His descriptions are strong and visual and will keep you engaged throughout the whole book. Unlike Coignet, Barres did not fight in many of Napoleon's campaigns. He was shut up in Mainz during 1814, was not present at Waterloo and did not engage in the war in Russia. That however adds to his story because it gives you insight into the other areas of the wars that were of equal importance. The book continues past the Napoleonic Wars and goes until his death in the 1840s.
