This was a thoroughly enjoyable read. We follow the RAF Navigator-author through a tour of the Far East flying the Sunderland in the early 50's. There are trips to fascinating locations like Ceylon, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Borneo, Japan, Vietnam and other exotic detours along the way. This is the Far East at a period of time not well covered in popular literature (the post WWII malaise which the author notes would soon be overtaken by obvious modernity!), and the author has keen eyes for describing the sights, sounds and smells he discovers on his sojourns in the Sunderland. One of the more fascinating aspects of this book, besides the great descriptions of the Far East and Asia, is the author's explanation of his duties as a navigator. As we know, this aviation profession is now dead for all practical purposes, replaced by INS and GPS, etcetera. But, in the days of the 50's, flying long distances over water, a navigator was a requirement. The author describes his duties determining drift, speed, celestial navigation, temperature, and a host of other navigation odds and ends requirements which will bring a smile to the face of any aviation enthusiast. Appendix 3 of the book contains a lengthy explanation of Dead-Reckoning navigation techniques the author used, and this information is well worth the book itself. Don't get me wrong, this is not just a book about technical aviation navigation; this is a book about the Sunderland, about Asia and the Far East in the 50's, and about navigation. But the author is a navigator and his perspective is from the navigator point of view. He appears to be a very competent navigator, and also has a keen sense for describing his surroundings in enjoyable narrative. I very highly recommend this book to anyone interested in flying, aviation, the Far East shortly after WWII, and the now extinct science (art?) of the human airplane navigator. I now can understand just why Sunderland crews were both sailors and airmen!

It was wonderful to read such a comprehensive account of operating the Sunderland flying boat in many circumstances. I had always found them a fascinating aircraft and this book was both informative and gripping. I also had no idea that they had remained in service for so long. Strongly recommended to anyone interested in aviation.
