This is an awesome illustrated primer on the elite Military Assistance Command, Vietnam - Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG). This element was a highly classified, multi-service United States special operations unit which conducted covert unconventional warfare operations prior to and during the Vietnam War. Many of the missions were external or cross-border operations into highly denied and politically sensitive areas. SOG was established to conduct strategic reconnaissance missions in Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam), the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam), Laos, and Cambodia; also the unit was tasked to carry out snatch operations; the capture of enemy prisoners, conducted rescue operations to retrieve prisoners of war throughout Southeast Asia; and conducted clandestine agent team activities and psychological operations. Sometimes this unit is confused with the Phoenix program but in reality had nothing to do with it. This book does an excellent job at describing the mission, organization and operations of SOG. As well as coverage of the recruitment process and training of the operators. I particularly liked this portion of the book that describes recon team leader training and the coverage of patrol tactics. Overall this is an excellent primer for the uninitiated and a good reference for the study of military history.

Few people both in the military then, now and in the future really appreciate the daily "heroics" of these guys working the border areas to include entry into Laos and Cambodia. The odds at becoming KIA or MIA was overwhelming...yet, most "ran" everyday knowing that death was just moments away.

Simply put.."brave me do".

Some might compare Iraq or Afghanistan to Vietnam in some metrics. But, in terms of raw bravery day in and day out...not much can compare to the sacrifices of MACVSOG Soldiers.

To all those...thankyou.

Afghanistan/2003; Iraq/2004; Horn of Africa (3 tours)

I ordered this book because I saw a picture in it of people I knew in it when I reviewed it before I bought it. The book is very factual and a good read. I was there at CCS 1967 to 1968, actually helped build the camp. A little more info on the Omega Team, B-50 Mike Force would have been nice for me. I started at FOB 2 in Kontum in July of 1967 and moved to CCS and came home in Feb '69. It is all true and much more.

Ive read several books on the subject and this one is the best. Great overview of the entire operation from all angles. Tells the stories of SOGs greatest heroes like Shriver, whom I now add at the end of every toast of alchohol in honor of his courage and skill. If you can only read one book about SOG, this is it!

Just a small document on SOG stating equipment, requirements etc - require more stories of actual runs across the fence like Myers

This book is loaded with all kinds of details concerning SOG teams: from the equipment and weapons used, the team's and team memeber's goals and characteristics, and how they conducted missions. Lots of little tied bits of information even shows the ingenuity that the RTs needed to survive.

Unlike a lot of books on the subjects this book deals with what went on in preporation to go do your governments bidding. This reminds me of the little books we use to get on military subjects. This is knowledge that should be preserved for future generations. Back when I was in the military we heard rumors of what was going on in vietnam, but scuddlebut runs rampant. Now some fifty years later we here all the whoop was real. Thank you all the men that made this book possible, may you rest in peace & thank you.

This was definitely one book I had been dreaming of for Osprey Publishing to churn out and this book didn't disappoint me in the least. If anything showed me, that despite the tech differences of the 21st Century warfighter and the SOG man back in Nam, those guys were a class all their own.

vast details, a lot of them put by the God Father of SOG - Major Plaster.
