Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Following his study of the astonishing range of French Royalist and foreign mercenary units employed by Britain in the period 1793–1802 (Men-at-Arms 328), the author describes - often for the first time in an English language publication - the part played by their successors during the crucial years of the Napoleonic Wars. He covers not only relatively well-recorded units, such as Roll’s, Meuron’s and Watteville’s Swiss corps, but also the unjustly neglected Italians, Corsicans and Greeks, and such exotica as the African and Ceylon regiments. Uniform details of nearly 40 corps are based on impressive primary research, and this book and its companion volume make a genuinely new contribution to Napoleonic studies.

From the Publisher

Packed with specially commissioned artwork, maps and diagrams, the Men-at-Arms series is an unrivalled illustrated reference on the history, organisation, uniforms and equipment of the world's military forces, past and present.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Superb Encore, June 21, 2000
Rene Chartrand is one of the best Napoleonic historians in the world today. He is an expert, tireless researcher, an excellent writer, and completely reliable. This gem of a book covers a period and units that are relatively unknown to most readers and enthusiasts, and they badly needed to be chronicled. The author has done his usual superb effort, and his filled a void in Napoleonic scholarship. The artwork by Patrice Courcelle is accurate, believably lifelike, and little gems in themselves. In my opinion, Osprey is lucky to have this pair turning out books for them, for they are definitely raising the bar in this historical period. This book is a must for the historian, enthusiast, and military modeler. I highly recommend it, and it is already well-worn constant use. Not only is it a reliable reference, but it is an interesting, lively read, jam-packed with information.
