Editorial Reviews

Review

Those who first encountered Sir Edward Leithen in Mountain Meadow will rejoice to go back to this early novel (now published here for the first time) in which Buchan tells a sinister adventure involving young Leithen. There is an evil organization, led by a human ??atan, and his friend, Tommy Deloraine, off on a wild goose chase after Pitt??ron, also disappears, under suspicious circumstances. Leithan, from headquarters in London, ??earths a series of clues, and eventually discovers that one of England's top men is the brains of this evil Power House, an organization aimed at destruction of civilization. Exciting reading - straight melodrama. (Kirkus Reviews) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

When his friend Charles Pitt-Heron vanishes mysteriously, Sir Edward Leithen is at first only mildly concerned. But a series of strange events that follow Pitt-Heron's disappearance convince Leithen that he is dealing with a sinister secret society. Their codename is 'The Power-House'. The authorities are unable to act without evidence. As he gets deeper involved with the underworld, Leithen finds himself facing the enemy alone and in terrible danger. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Classic of Paranoia, April 16, 2007
By Chris Ward (Costa Rica) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Power House (Paperback)
Though not as good as his "The 39 Steps," this lesser effort is still an enjoyable read. Buchan efectively invented the thriller genre, and this short novel follows the rules, though in a somewhat diffident manner. Our hero is a staid lawyer/politician who stumbles upon a conspiracy that finds-- it seems, anyway-- most of the people of London on his tail, seeking his demise. Buchan is businesslike as always, and this is one of his better efforts.

A very interesting book which captivates your attention from beginning to end. John Buchan writes "lyrically", candid, smooth style which provides readers with easy reading.
