The Greenleaf Guide is an excellent resource to help you teach your children ancient history and Old Testament history. For each lesson, you read a chapter or so of the Old Testament. The guide then gives you questions to discuss, explanations of the historical setting, as well as suggestions for how to handle "complicated" readings from the Bible. The guide is helpful even if you want to read it to study Old Testament history yourself.

As we have used this guide through the past year I would say that it is fairly simple & straight forward in style. It uses a question format that's easy to use. Read a few passages of bible text & pose the questions from the guide. Even our 4 & 6 year olds like to give a try at answering the questions though it is geared to older children!

My 8 year old son and I read through the Old Testament's historical books using this book as our guide to discussion topics. The Shearer's have presented some interesting questions and comments on the Old Testament scriptures and I found myself learning almost as much as my son did! I would recommend this book for parents with children in elementary school, or even older.

In truth, this book was much more in-depth than we needed, and also a bit hard to use. I ended up picking and choosing information from the book. It was especially good for helping students FIND the main points in the Bible accounts and for introducing the main people. I thought it went way too much into lesser kings. Then again, I was more interested in teaching the prophets and the captivity/return than the kings, so my goal and this book's overview were not exactly in alignment.

I was let down that there was almost never connections between how the Old Testament (prophecies, temple sacrifices, even families and ancestral information)can inform the New Testament.

It's okay but not what I expected. Other Greenleaf guides have the history stories rewritten for a child's reading. This one has you read the Bible directly, which is fine but not as interesting to my 10 year old. Instead, this guide has a bunch of questions for discussion instead. That was fine to me but my child disliked it. Just be aware of the different style from the other Greenleaf guides.

This is our 2nd copy of the Greenleaf Guide to the Old Testament. We wore the first one out after about 8 years. So we are fans. It gives you great questions that are a great starting point discussions. It helps the kids think through what we've just read.

A good guide for elementary school studies. I've been looking for some solid materials for teaching Biblical history to young children. This book provides more guidance and contains more substance than the superficial, cartoony magazines that many kids are forced to read in "religious education" classes. Works well in combination with other materials like the Holman Bible Atlas, the Illustrated Bible History of the Old and New Testaments by Ignatius Schuster, and Introduction to the Bible by John Laux.

I used this with our children in our homeschool. It is wonderful for multi-age teaching as you are able to help younger ones understand the material without boring the older ones. I love it and would highly recommend the whole Greenleaf Guide series. We used all that were available at the time. We are now buying another copy so that my husband can use it as a Sunday School resource for our church.
