This book provides an easy to read overview of pet food industry practices, problems, and the possibly devastating impact of packaged foods upon the health of your dog or cat. Dr. Fox (and Co.) provide background information for the toxic pet food recalls a couple years ago, and explain how lack of oversight and profit margins, along with common veterinary decisions could lead chronic or fatal health problems. How is pet food produced? What is in the food, and how does it affect your animal? Equally important, this book informs pet owners of humane and practical solutions to common health problems which are CAUSED BY PET FOODS: allergies, urinary tract infections, diabetes, obesity, etc.

Very important differences between canine and feline physiology and nutritional requirements are discussed, and a few alternative easy home-made recipes for dog/cat food and treats are also provided. Good information about pet vaccinations and nutritional tables are included in the appendices.

If your pet is sick, listless, fat, or allergic... You should read this book! The food you provide your animal could be making things worse, not better. THIS BOOK IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR ALL PET OWNERS.

Not Fit for a Dog! is amazing. Imagine three veterinarians that 'get it' about pet food, three veterinarians that see how important nutrition is to our pets. Now imagine sitting down with these three veterinarians and asking them questions about what corn or soy does to the insides of your pet, asking them their opinion on raw food or home cooked pet food or prescription pet foods....that's Not Fit for a Dog! This is what the book does. It's medical, but not too medical. It's science, but not too much science. The book gives pet owners - in no uncertain terms - medical evidence of what most commercial pet foods are doing to the health of millions of pets.

If I could wave a magic wand, and receive a free wish...I'd wish that every practicing veterinarian would read this book. And with one more wave of my magic wand, I'd have every AVMA Diplomat that voted against the feeding of raw pet food be required to read this book too. Not Fit for a Dog! tears apart the raw pet food misconceptions, destroys the prescription pet food fix-it theory, and so much more. The book is common sense backed by medical science (I'd love to see how the AVMA would talk their way out of this one).

If you think you've read it all about the pet food industry, you haven't. Not Fit for a Dog! is a very unique book that I recommend to any pet food consumer that wants to learn more. You'll want to keep this book for reference purposes (plus there are home prepared pet food recipes in the back), so buy an extra copy for your vet. Seriously...buy an extra copy for your vet. Practicing veterinarians will be hard pressed to find a valid argument against the truth spoken in this book. I can't imagine the good that could be done if more vets understood...this book can turn the tides.

I found this book to be the most calm and informative of all the pet food books. The others seem too intent on shocking pet parents, some with the purpose of scaring them into buying. Fear mongering is rampant on this topic and some people are making a lot of money by exploiting how much we care about our pets.

This book provides easily understood nutrition information and I appreciate the fact that it is written by pet professionals. As long as pet parents keep a level head on their shoulders while they read it, they'll benefit from the contents.

The main problem I had with it is it's too generalized in its view of the pet food industry, and even veterinarians. Much of the opinion is based on the assumption that they're all the same and that's not the case. This is common in industry books though - they judge an entire industry by what the worst in the industry does.

Overall a good book on the subject though, I don't regret buying it.

I was in a phase where I had just bought myself a kitten and as usual I always overload on research to make sure I am doing everything right. I stumbled across some pet food recalls on the internet but wanted to know more detail about pet foods. This book sure did it for me. It has tons of information some of it disturbing at the least. If you own a cat or a dog I suggest you pick this book up and give it a read. Even if you choose not to believe it I think it is still an interesting read. There is so much in this book that you cannot find on the internet. I even went and bought other books similar to this one by other authors and for a month I could not stop reading about the "truth about manufactured dog and cat food".

I guess I had my head in the sand. I remember the dog food "crisis" from a couple of years ago but believed I was "safe" because I fed my yorkie a prescription diet for her liver problems. After I read in this book that most dog foods are made by the same 6-7 companies, I realized I was wrong. For the past month, I've been preparing all her food and she is having far fewer sick days. Book is well written.

What an eye opener! I didn't realize until I read this book how truly out for profit the big pet food companies are. They brainwash us in veterinary school with free food and "education" about their products. What they don't tell us is that many of these same products may actually be what is making many of our patients sick! I commend Dr. Fox, et al for having the courage to write this book. I would really like to see him do an interview tour to get it more publicized. Anyway, I definitely recommend this book for all pet loving people and anyone involved in breeding or animal care.
