This book is the best of its kind on the market. I am a psychologist who has worked for years in both the business and clinical realm. I have often had the challenge of coaching executives whose career has been stymied because of their anger and aggression, managers who are neither liked nor respected but feared because of their reactions, and employees who are on the cusp of losing their jobs because they lack the understanding and/or motivation to take responsibility for their angry responses. Historically, in all these cases, I had been forced to cobble together information from different sources in an effort to educate and support my clients; this book changes the playing field. This is the first book I have found that offers a comprehensive approach to changing one's anger responses, from offering a substantial education on the basics of anger, to a strong discussion on change readiness, to its 7 proven ways to change anger and ultimately living a happier life, this book has been long awaited and is a welcomed addition to anyone who has worked with angry people. Moreover, it is a gift to those people who have had difficulty managing their own anger. Whether they are currently aware of how their anger affects them and others around them, this book is an excellent tool to make them aware and create the opportunity to create change.

One of the strongest facets of this book is its structure. It is broken down into 3 parts, each part containing various chapters that provide important information in easily consumed sections.

Part I: Anger Basics. This section is among the clearest most concise and comprehendible reviews of anger and is broken down into 3 chapters.

Chapter 1: Anger 101: Common Questions and Answers.

Tafrate and Kassinove have done it again. On par with Edna Foa's "Stop Obsessing!" and Greenberger & Padesky's "Mind Over Mood," this book is a true self help resource for all individuals. The reader is introduced to the nature of anger, and how this can affect one's life. This is followed by a great chapter that is left out in most self help books, which is a section designated to assessing the reader's readiness to change their thinking and live a happier life. Not everyone is ready to change right away, and these authors take this into consideration and help the reader to achieve readiness.

After the introduction and the motivational chapter, readers are taken through a series of steps that allow them to gradually and systematically address their anger. These steps are arranged from the easiest to master to more intricate methods later in the book. Throughout the text, readers are provided with samples of how others have used the techniques detailed in the book, which further helps to make the reader's goals seem more achievable. The illustrated methods are also accompanied by worksheets that can be copied and used in multiple situations where anger might present a problem. Basically, all the bases are covered and the reader is provided with an arsenal with which to battle their anger.

I highly recommend this book to not only those people who's anger is getting out of control, but to anyone who is interested in learning about how they think, and how they might be able to change their thinking. The methods that are presented to the reader are applicable to many different situations and feelings, and as such I would without reservation tell anyone I know to pick a copy up. You have nothing to lose, but a lot to gain.

This is a great, readable book. It would be helpful to anyone, not just those with chronic anger problems, because we all struggle with anger from time to time. The striking quality of the book for me is that it offers real, manageable strategies for controlling anger. It is also very pleasurable to read. The authors are humorous, and it also really comes through that they care about people and helping people to live a more satisfying existence.

I've read through a few anger management books, and this book, though it had very similar ideas as others, just seemed to have too many "examples" of how people dealt with anger in a certain situation. Whether the names were changed in those examples or whether they were even real examples, they just seemed like too much. These examples that were supposed to be real life examples didn't seem real life at all. They seemed very made up and forced. Since I've had much better success and enjoyment from other anger management books, I didn't even make 40 pages into this one and just stopped reading it because the examples used just didn't hit home with me very well. If you're a man looking for a book on anger management I suggest reading Beyond Anger: A Guide for Men: How to Free Yourself from the Grip of Anger and Get More Out of Life by Thomas J. Harbin.

This is a very practical guide to two things: first, understanding what anger is, and second, managing it in a way that minimizes its destructive potential. Whether you have anger issues yourself, or you work, counsel, or live with people who do, this book contains insights and approaches that can probably help. While the idea of “seven proven ways to control anger” sounds like marketing hype (and to some extent probably is), the truth is that the methods the authors describe make sense. The trick, of course, as the authors point out, is practice and realistic expectations. You don’t have to be a raging, frothing, anger machine to benefit from this book. If you ever get even moderately angry and wish you didn’t, take a look and see if there might be something here for you. I’ve only read two books on the subject, but for my money this one is the better of the two by a substantial margin.
