About the Actor

The earliest surviving film about the battle of the Alamo, THE MARTYRS OF THE ALAMO or THE BIRTH OF TEXAS was conceived by the great, pioneering filmmaker D. W. Griffith as a follow-up to his ground-breaking and controversial Civil War classic THE BIRTH OF A NATION (1915). Directed by William Christy Cabanne, THE MARTYRS OF THE ALAMO is filled with magnificent battle sequences and recreations of all the mythic moments of the famous seige. It is both history lesson and rousing entertainment from one of the masters of cinema.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Typical D.W. Griffith production, November 19, 2002
By A Customer
D.W. Griffith was a racist bigot to say the least. His depictions of Blacks and Hispanics in his films will make your blood boil. Unfortunatly, he was a product of his times. (May we never see their like again) If you are looking for historical accuracy, forget it. If you want to see one of the first "Alamo" movies, then grit your teeth while you sit through it. Only the vaguest of historical detail are present. Oddly enough, this is one of the few "Alamo" films to actually depict the execution of some seven Anglo survivors. (Crockett was not among them)
