This is the first Neil Gunn book I've read, and I just ordered several more on the strength of it. This one is a strong story about family love and conflict, and about a young man trying to come into his own against considerable odds. Neil Gunn's writing is intelligent, perceptive, and full of gorgeous descriptions of the countryside in Scotland. I really look forward to reading more of his stories.

I loved this book as much as the first one of Neil Gunn's that I read. It is richly written about early farming crofts in Scotland .He is an author that gives you value on every page .What I like about his writing is his wonderful way of describing people and places so you feel like you are there. He was very passionate about the Scottish Highlands This book follows the life of a young man that follows a path set mainly by his mother and her quest for him to have a good education. But his love of the land and his home bring him back to his real life's path. I hope you like it as much as I did.
