Are you looking to introduce classic poetry to a child? And, by classic I mean canonical--Shakespeare, Dickinson, Poe. Then look no further than "The Barefoot Book of Classic Poems."

"The Barefoot Book of Classic Poems," compiled and illustrated by Jackie Morris, and with an introduction by Carol Ann Duffy, is a beautiful new collection of poetic masterpieces.

The book opens with Emily Dickinson's "A Book" and E.V. Rieu's "The Paintbox," honoring the word and illustration. What follows is a wide variety of poems you know from Nash to Yeats, Carroll to Rilke, Millay to Shakespeare, Stevens to Browning.

Jackie Morris illustrates her selected poems with lush illustrations of animals, people, oceans, seas, ships, and many, many stars. My favorite illustration adorns a two-page spread with "She Walks in Beauty" (Byron) on the left page and "He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven" (Yeats) on the right. On the left page a serious man holds the train of a woman's blue cloak, a cloak that continues all the way to the top of the right page where a woman stares out into the "cloths of heaven."

"The Barefoot Book of Classic Poems" is a perfect gift for the holidays or for a new baby. It's one of those rare books that can stand on a bookshelf from birth through high school graduation.

I would want to give this book and/or read it aloud to any child of any age. It is sensitive, imaginative, bold yet classic, and beautiful to see. However, it was not scrupulously checked for spelling errors. Two examples: The second line of Byron's "She Walks in Beauty," should read "Of cloudless climes" -- meaning "climates" -- not "chimes". Untermeyer's "Dorothy Dances", when published in 1922, had a typographical error, corrected later. Unfortunately, the old error shows up in "The Barefoot Book of Classic Poems". The last word of this poem is "flame", not "fame".

This book has a great collection of poems, including the 'Jabberwoky' and 'The Owl and the Pussycat, which are awesome for kids as young as preschool. While its true, some of the poems are too deep for a young child to grasp the meaning, they still enjoy the words and can create images in their mind of the tiger in William Blake's poem, even if they can't grasp what he is saying about the Creator. I read some of the sillier poems such as Custard the Dragon to wake up my 6 year old in the morning and it is a great way to get him going (reading stories just puts him back to sleep). I can't say enough about the illustrations which are so important in a child's book. I buy this as a gift for new parents.

The Barefoot Book of Classic Poems is a great compilation of excellent poems that even the most literature resistant person is likely to remember from middle and high school English classes. These old poems are recast with the fresh and beautiful illustration. This book would be a great way to introduce even small children to some of the best poems ever written.

Also the price is quite reasonable for the hard cover and beautiful book. I highly recommend this book.

If, like me, you have been searching for a poetry book that will introduce kids to some of the truly great poets of history (take a look at the table of contents!) yet with a light touch -- this is your book. The selections are appealing and vividly illustrated, and nourish the natural appetite for adventure, nobility and beauty that all kids have, but which is too seldom encouraged.

I was relieved to see that this book maintains a consistent level of quality throughout: nowhere does it sandbag young readers with gross-out "humor" and mixed messages about the way they should feel about their parents, teachers and siblings. That, frankly, is as important to me as the fact that "The Barefool Book of Classic Poems" introduces kids to the work of Shakespeare, Milton, Yeats, Tennyson, Wordsworth, Edna St. Vincent Millay and many others.

All in all, a refreshing (and overdue) "find"!

I love Jackie Morris, her artwork and legend-like stories. And I do like this anthology of classic poems for children. But there is one glaring problem....she only includes one Emily Dickinson poem, A Book, in the front cover. And there are ASTONISHINGLY no other Dickinson works in the body of the book. We are really taken aback by this, as she gives several other historically prominent poets more than one piece in the book. Emily is a master, an other-worldly, one of kind giant in the cosmos of writers, poets, and artists of written word. Actually, in many ways she is THE giant. Ouch...
