The central plot to this book relates to euthanasia and subsequent cannibalism, therefore for those who lean towards a weak constitution, don't read it. If you feel stronger, then it is worth a read. I only gave this book 3 stars because it started off too slowly and it did not gain pace until more than halfway through. However, I kept reading it because I thought it would get better. In fact, there were times when I felt so repulsed reading this book, I almost set it aside and not finish it. There were twists and turns along the way, as expected, and I was totally stunned at the finish. The ending was a surprise. The only other criticism of this book is that I often had times where I had difficulty identifying the narrator as it jumped around a little. This may not be the case for other readers who can set aside larger periods of time for reading. Those who have read my previous reviews will know that I deliberately reveal little of the plot to ensure future readers maximum enjoyment .

The great thing about this authors books is that even though they all feature Cate Austin they can all be read as a stand alone. The Sacrificial Man is the second novel and the only one I hadn't read.

With another hard hitting story line, this novel had me gripped from start to finish.

Alice is a very complex character. She lost her mum at a young age and even though she was brought up in a fairly normal home with her adoptive parents she never really gave back the love they tried to show her. She has led a fairly lonely existence only ever having one friend who loves her.

Cate has great instincts and from the very start she knows there is more to Alice than meets the eye. I never really warmed to Alice's character even by the end. The relationship that she has with 'Smith' was extremely strange that got even more stranger the more we found out about it.

The Sacrificial Man is a dark and slightly disturbing read. It has a very thought provoking storyline that even after reading I am still un decided as to whether the outcome with Alice is one that is befitting of her or not. Can't wait to read more by this author.

This is the second Dugdale book about a probation officer reporting on a convicted criminal. Like its predecessor it employs the genre of separately following the stories of the good and bad guys. while the book is quite readable the plot twists are fairly obvious and the surprise ending isn't much of a surprise. The heroine, probation officer Cate Austin, seems almost to fade into the background against "Robin" (convicted of aiding a suicide and awaiting sentence) and "Smith" (the suicide) even though her task is to prepare a pre-sentencing report on "Robin" for the court. The point of the story, of course, is how Cate gets to the truth of what really happened about "Smith's" suicide. All in all, something to read when there is nothing on
TV.

Once again, Ruth has written a great book. Sounds simple. A man advertises for a woman to help him commit suicide. Why is someone willing to help do this for someone they don't know? And is it really that simple? Well, yes, and, no. I don't want to ruin the ending. So, I will just say, again, the author managed to put in a few twists I never saw coming. I felt like this could be believable. It was very suspenseful. and I just didn't want it to end. I tried to read this book slowly, so as to savor it, but it was just so good I had to keep reading. A very thought provoking subject. Fans of Jodi Picoult should enjoy this book, as you really need to read the whole book to get inside the story. Skipping to the end? Can't. You would miss the whole story! I almost didn't choose this book because I wasn't sure I liked the premise of someone "eating a piece of a dead person". But it wasn't gory, and it did really make the story believable. It felt necessary. I was really glad I chose this book. From now on, this author is on my can't miss list. Her writing is very descriptive. The subjects are timeless. The stories are suspenseful, even when you think you know the ending.

I would suggest that any reader new to Ruth Dugdal looking at this book should read "The Woman Before Me" first as it gives you a good background into Cate (the probation officer) and explains some references in this book that otherwise would have you scratching your head.

This book asks the ultimate question...should you be allowed to help someone die? What drives a person to want to kill themself? What drives a person to want to help that person die?

Both characters have their own secret reasons for this desire and they hide it from each other (and the reader) very well until all is revealed at the end. The surface reasons are matyrdom - to sacrifice ones self like Jesus and also to die in the prime of your life, before love and age deteriorate a beautiful moment - all very poetic and romantic, but the truth festers under the surface and threatens to unmask them both.

Ruth once again looks at the importance of our family structures and how our parents ultimately shape and map our futures and breed our insecurities and self worth. How much of our personality is nature versus nurture? Can we ever escape the child within us?

Ruth is a light and compelling read, not heavy or overly gruesome and no explicit scenes or profanity. She takes a unique look underneath the stories that you might see in the papers or on the news and lets us behind the scenes to really know the characters and what makes them tick.

Ruth tends to write about characters that are not easily likeable, however you feel comfortable with them and understand them and their actions through the delicate weaving of her storytelling.

If I had any criticism it would be that I would like her books to be a bit longer and to flesh out the characters a little more. Not that the story needed it, but for gluttony alone, I would have liked to spend a bit longer with them.
