Susie Bentley-Taylor and Bekah Moore have put together a series of 20 Bible stories with accompanying recipes in their new book Bake Through the Bible (The Good Book Company, 2013). The book is designed for parents to use with young children (think older toddler to early elementary-aged). However, my nine- and ten-year-olds are quite interested in taking an active role in "baking through the Bible".

Baking Through the Bible has a number of wonderful qualities:
*The book is well-designed, colorful and visually engaging.
*The recipes and instructions are clear, with photographs and small graphics to illustrate each step for young readers.
*There is a wide variety of recipes, including cookies, cupcakes, simple dinners and lunches, and breads.
*Each two to four page spread includes a retold Bible story, a prayer, a recipe, discussion questions, a time-saving cooking tip, and something to reflect on.
*There is a clear theme to each spread. The themes all tie-in to a strong gospel message. In my opinion, this is the strongest aspect of the book.
*The language is appropriate for young children. The stories are told in an engaging manner they can understand.
*The theology is sound.

In spite of the beauty of the book and the fantastic concept, I had a few concerns about the manner in which the Bible stories were told. To be completely fair to the authors and the publisher, I should probably disclose that I write Bible stories in a creative manner for publication for young children. Because of that, I have a few rules I follow (along with my editors, who are vigilante about guarding the truth of God's Word). These may not be universally accepted rules. The authors might not feel comfortable writing Bible stories in the manner I do.

I received this book FREE in exchange for an honest review from Cross-Focused Reviews. I cannot honestly say whether or not I would have spent the sticker price for this book since my family is on a very tight budget and it seems a bit high. But I can say that if I found it on sale, I would definitely buy it!

This book has 20 Bible stories that go along with a fun recipe for the kids to try out. Personally I can say that my children enjoy the simple, engaging style, they are told in.

It's designed to take your child through the main storyline of the Bible. I feel there are a lot of important stories that could have been added but I'm guessing it's not easy to match up recipes with all of these stories.

But then, maybe they'll come out with another one sometime. Make it a whole series...

Along with the stories there are questions to discuss while you're cooking and even a recap to use while you're eating what you've cooked.

We have not completed all of these recipes yet. We are adding this book to our homeschool and going through them slowly, doing one a week. I am going to post about that experience on my Cooking Adventures With Kids blog! [...]
I have read through the book though and I can tell you this. The stories are engaging and simple. The recipes look like a lot of fun! And the kids are excited to get started! That alone tells me this is a GREAT book for kids!

I would recommend this book to parents, especially those of you who may be having some difficulty getting them to understand the BIG bible stories. The interactive nature gives children a whole new understanding of how the stories relate to them personally.

Some parents work naturally with their children in the kitchen. Others need a bit of help. Bake Through the Bible offers that little bit of help in a fun way.

Bake Through the Bible is a cookbook and Bible lesson guide all rolled into one. Each of the twenty activities includes the following components:

-a Bible story
-an overview of the cooking activity that reinforces the Bible story
-step-by-step instructions for cooking, including tips and hints
-"While You Cook" and "While You Eat" discussion guides, as well as a prayer focus

Bake Through the Bible is a beautiful and book! The pages are full-color, yet well designed to make sure no information gets "lost" in the presentation. Illustrations accompany each recipe, both for the cooking process and to show the end result. It's also a durable book, with pages that can be cleaned up after spills and usage.

As for the recipes themselves, not every recipe in Bake Through the Bible will be appropriate for every family. But, the recipes are structured for maximum ease of working with children, especially if parents read through each activity in advance to notice the tips, warnings, and time-savers.

The Bible stories are split evenly between the Old and New Testaments. They are paraphrased in the text of Bake Through the Bible, but the references are clear. I'm not too fond of every paraphrasing method chosen by the authors, but I have not seen anything truly negative about the Bible stories.

Bake Through the Bible truly does accomplish its purpose of bringing families together in the kitchen to learn cooking skills and the Bible stories all at the same time. Even parents who are not particularly skilled in the kitchen can utilize this book, as it clearly outlines certain techniques and skills needed to complete the recipes. It claims to be for young children, but even parents of children through middle school age could benefit from this fun book.
