Shawn Edgington makes us face facts: we may be earning "A" grades as traditional parents, but getting failing grades as "technology" parents of our grade school and high school children. Fortunately, she doesn't just shock us with horror stories, but truly illuminates the Internet's dark shadows. She equips us to understand the key technologies, to appreciate technology's all-encompassing role in our children's lives and to protect our children from lurking cyberbullies, predators and "frenemies."
If you wonder whether you need this book, do you know the answers to all of the following questions:
1. What are the early warning signs of textual harassment?
2. Do you know how to use the ignore/block/report function on your child's cell phone?
3. What does your school's crisis management plan provide about text messaging?
4. Why should you be worried if your child's Facebook "friends" list is very long?
5. What is SafetyWeb and how can it help you as a parent?
6. Why is "checking in" so dangerous for your child?
Shawn Edgington empowers you to keep your children safe and secure in the wild world of technology.

I am so glad I read this book. Even though I use technology extensively there were many hidden dangers I was unaware of. Children are faced with challenges far beyond what most adults had to deal with when they were growing up. This guide provided great insight into what is really going on in a teen's cyber world and how best to deal with it. I even picked up many tips to assist me with my own personal usage. Parents need to start young and start right when enabling their children with the tools of today and this will help them do it with ease. This is everything a parent needs to know in one book.

The world is changing at such a fast pace, especially in the technology field, it's difficult to keep up. But, there seems to be no end to how people use every opportunity to be deceitful and malicious. Yes, Facebook and other social media sites are great in keeping us connected, but there are many pitfalls. This book gives great detail on those pitfalls as well as information on how to deal with each of them. This is a terrific source for parents.

I picked up this book with the intent to educate myself on how to protect my teens and upcoming teen from the potential risk of "facebooking" and "texting". However, after reading this I learned that these potential dangers are not limited to the world of young adults and teens who are the social media junkies. As an adult who only dabbles in this new world I am also at risk. After reading this book I immediatly adjusted the privacy settings, which I orginally just depended on the default settings to insure by privacy...big mistake!
Great job Shawn making sure we all are aware of the risks...as well, as the benefits.

This book is a must-read for parents of any age children. My children are still very young but I can already see that they are influenced by mobile technology -- their friends all have the latest in i-technology and speak in terms of texts and posts. Shawn's book provides a foundation for parents so that we are not blindsided by the real-time communication world facing our children -- and helps us prepare strategies and boundaries BEFORE we are faced with a scary situation.

I bought this book for both of my sisters who have starting to get there own cell phones and facebook pages. I believe it is very important for parents to have all the tools avaiable when allowing their children to have access to the internet and/or cell phones so they are aware of the dangers and have the controls to protect them.

As a school principal for for 24 years and as someone who has given dozens of parenting and Cyber Safety seminars I highly recommend Shawn's book.

Shawn clearly explains the problem, then gives solid easy to follow solutions. She does not scare parents, but honestly presents the dangers. Then explains how parents can be wise to the dangers and implement solutions as well as wise practices for prevention.

I found Shawn's understanding of children to be realistic which caused her advice to be right on.

If you are looking for good solid advice on handling the many mine fields that today's technology brings you should avail yourself of Shawn's book.
