Written by French artist, Philippe Coudray, BENJAMIN BEAR IN FUZZY THINKING is a collection of comic strips aimed at children that follows the misadventures of Benjamin Bear and his unnamed rabbit friend. Even though Benjamin isn't supposed to be a role model, he's clearly a character created for children. For instance, in one page Benjamin paints a picture of a cow. The picture is horrible and the cow laughs because it's so bad. Then Benjamin beats her up and she looks exactly like his painting of her. I don't find that gag funny, but I know children do. My favorite strip in the collection is when Benjamin takes his pet fish and bird on a trip undersea (the fish ends up in the bird cage and the bird is kept in the fishbowl while underwater). BENJAMIN BEAR IN FUZZY THINKING isn't a very long book, but it is entertaining. The illustrations are rather simple and enduring. Recommended for children from 1st-4th grades.

As always, Toon Books continue to deliver helpful, nicely done graphic novels for kids. Benjamin Bear in Fuzzy Thinking is another example: sturdy board book, colorful, vibrant images, age-appropriate grammar, and a very useful "How to Read Comics with Your Kids" guide in the back. Toon Books are conveniently divided into levels (this too is explained in their books), and Benjamin Bear is a Level Two (grades 1-2).

The simple stories inside the book follow sweet, kindly Benjamin and his menagerie of friends as they do such things as fly a kite, fish, play games, and go sailing. It's all pretty simple and straightforward, which is nice, and gives young readers a lot to grasp unto (the stories also give parents plenty of opportunity to act out if they are reading them to their kids). The colors are beautifully done as well--muted, pleasing, and lovely.

The stories were originally done in French by painter and artist Philippe Coudray and here have been translated into English. As one would expect, they provide excellent reading material for young kids just starting out with the language. The images will help solidify those reading skills.

Phillipes books are wonderful, funny and inspired. This book is the ONLY one that toon-books publishes that properly capture the quirky spirit of comic books properly. Also it's their best seller. I really hope more of his get translated.
I supposed I can teach my son French.
