By Lonnie E. Holder HALL OF FAMETOP 1000 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on March 24, 2011
Format: Paperback
Jeremy "Jem" Martin's father Carl is a scientist. Carl could have been an ordinary scientist, but he opted for doing bizarre and unusual things, like developing acid bombs and researching Leonardo da Vinci. While Jem's life was unusual, it seemed stable enough. Until, that is, the day that his father came home and told Jem that he quit his job. Jem's father explained that his boss actually fired him about the same time as he quit, so Jem's father is uncertain of who spoke first. Regardless, Jem's father is without employment.

Shortly before Jem's father quit, or his boss fired him, he came home from work in an unusual condition. Indeed, Jem's father had somehow managed to transform himself into a Sumatran orangutan. Further, it appeared that the transition was permanent.

There are many advantages to being an orangutan. Rarely does anyone argue with an orangutan. Where does an adult orangutan sit? Anywhere it wants to sit. Orangutans have a very long reach, and can do things with their hands and feet either together or separately. Orangutans have a lovely fur coat that reduces the need for clothing. Of course, orangutans are very strong. However, how many people would employ an orangutan, particularly a recently unemployed orangutan? In fact, how many restaurants and stores would permit an orangutan to enter? Yes, there are many advantages to being an orangutan, but there are also many disadvantages.

Jem and his father do the only thing they can think to do. They decide to go searching for the last notebook of Leonardo da Vinci, which Carl believes must exist in the United States because of evidence he has - or imagines he has.

B. B. Wurge's website claims him to be the world's most talented orangutan. Well, wouldn't you believe that if you knew he has now written his third children's book? Amazing for an orangutan that lives in an elevator in Manhattan, wouldn't you agree? My students at Brooklyn Elementary School have loved Billy and the Birdfrogs as well as Squiggle. I am anxious to share The Last Notebook of Leonardo with my future classes. It is obvious to this reviewer that the themes of "family" and "adventure" rank high on B. B. Wurge's list of story ideas.

In The Last Notebook of Leonardo those themes come through loud and clear again. The story is based on the main characters, Jem and his father, Carl, who is a scientific genius, who turns himself into a nine-foot orangutan (another thing, B. B. Wurge, for some reason always manages to get a member of the primate family into his books, too!). The problem is that he can't turn himself back into a human being, which causes a problem with his work and his landlord. For that reason, Jem's father packs their belongings into a huge wagon and they set out on foot for an adventure.

You might say that Carl has an obsession with "finding the last resting place of Leonardo da Vinci, which according to his last notebook, may not have been in Italy." Along their journey, Jem and Carl have adventures that only B. B. Wurge himself could create. Carl continues to show Jem how imagination plays such an important role in our lives. Children now days need to use their imaginations more than they do. The Last Notebook of Leonardo will help them to do just that. This is another fun read from B. B. Wurge himself!
