La Figa is a colorful, delicious exposition of chef/artist Tiberio Simone's approach to life. His philosophy is simple: Eat Well & Make Love.

It's a gorgeously produced volume, impeccably designed by Phil Kovacevich, combining photography and prose. The wonderful photos, by Matt
Freedman, are the lush center of the book. Food on naked people? It's amazing! The cucumber mermaid, the seaweed god... Tiberio's culinary skills,
displaying nature's bounty on a range of humanity, are only part of the photographs' appeal. The intimacy and delicacy implied, the grace
of human relations, and the patience, are humbling.

And the recipes! They are on pages designed differently from the rest of the book, for easy reference, and are written in Tiberio's charming, easy style.

They are simple, delicious and effective.
Food as nourishment, as something to share, as a gift and as an appreciation of the planet's abundance...

This is a great gift for lovers of delicious natural food, for lovers of art photography, and just for LOVERS.

Brilliantly conceived and executed in every way. I love this book. It is a visual delight. Tiberio and Matt bring a playful creative attitude to the delicious subject of food & sexuality; it is a celebration of the love of both. I cannot recommend it enough, especially for anyone interested in eating well, making love and exploring how the two feed off one another. Bon Appétit !

I love cookbooks. There, I said it. I love to read them, hang out with them, even dream of writing one myself. Just a warning about this particular book, however - if what you want is a lot of recipes to wrangle with, you might be better off with the Joy of Cooking. In all fairness that would be a good name for this work - or perhaps less succinctly - the joy, the pleasure, the love, of cooking and life.

The book's essence is of a collection of simple and intensely personal recipes (all with an associated tale to tell) alongside his recollections of growing up (and I'm now officially and intensely jealous of anyone who grew up in Italy on an olive farm: "one of my earliest memories is of running barefoot through the olive fields" - ok, yes, I hate you), alongside a meticulously crafted set of images and photographs of food and people. Each chapter focuses on one of wide-ranging assortment of fruits, vegetables (his anecdote of zucchinis and trousers presages spinal tap by a couple of years), and assorted food stuffs (such as olive oil, coffee, etcetera.)

And while the term food porn is sometimes jestingly applied to glossy beautifully shot books, at times La Figa ventures more thoroughly in that literal direction than any other work I've personally seen. You might be relieved to know that not a lot of clothing was harmed in the making of the book, as otherwise nude models are draped artistically with the chapter's heroic theme. If you look beyond the obvious you can start to see some Mr. Simone's skill in the kitchen (he's a James Beard award winning chef), with his flawless knife work, suppleness of the designs (many quite elaborate) and the rapidity in which he must have had to work to get the models ready for the camera.

"La Figa" is an amazing creation of a truly gifted chef Tiberio Simone and a talented photograph Matt Freedman. This book is a unique combination of art, erotic, and food. I highly recommend this book to anyone who values Beauty and Taste.

As others have already said, this work is many books in one: gorgeous photoessays, memoirs, recipies, and more. What is most striking to me, though, is how lovingly and respectfully the authors have covered their subjects (no pun intended). One might expect a book on food and the human form to just be an excuse to show off beautiful bodies, but instead, each subject/model is decorated and captured with love, respect, and breathtaking art. You will find yourself staring at the photos asking yourself, "how did they do that?" and "how did they get that to stay?" and "what body part is that?" The brilliant photographs span the range from abstract to playful to sensual, and the subjects include bodies of all sizes, shapes, sexes, and colors, but always both the food and the models are treated with great respect and a thoughtful artistic eye. This is food art, not food porn, and brilliant art at that. Simultaneously, the charming stories of the author's experiences with food, his recipes, and even bits of advice, playfully complement the visual journey.

This book is on my coffee table and I expect it will stay there for quite some time. I also expect that anyone who comes over and takes a look through it will end up ordering their own copy as well :)

In the name of full disclosure, I must confess that I am one of the bodies on the cover of this book, and I have known Tiberio for some 15 years. Having heard him talk about this project, and having seen photos over the years, and having been in one of the photo shoots, I was still blown away when Tiberio put my copy in my hands just this evening. This book is SO MUCH MORE than I had imagined it would be. He and Matt have created something of so much beauty, and infused it with such a loving spirit, you just can't help but be enchanted. As another reviewer pointed out, it's not for prudes; Tiberio is outspoken and honest about his life, and his approach to love, food and sex - but the emphasis on giving and receiving pleasure is always a useful reminder. The book emanates everything he stands for, and leaves you feeling fed, nourished and loved. Take a bite! You'll love it too.
