A heartening book about how ordinary people make a difference in the world. Each person featured in this book has made a difference in the world by observing and taking action to help others, to work for peace and justice. Featuring the stories of over 50 advocates and activists with amazing stories to tell from South Africa to Minnesota, 9/11 to election reform, Compassionate Rebel describes the work of people who care about the future of the earth, of the planet, of humankind. Instead of a steady diet of too many garbage talk TV and radio shows, sit com-edies that aren't, so-called survivor shows, and too often news that is lies or glosses over the real issues--like siphoning money into the wars and away from human needs--each of these people steps forward into the real world to do real work for others. Read these stories. You will be inspired.

The Compassionate Rebel is filled with a treasure trove of the most amazing stories. I've always been fascinated by the accounts of everyday heroes, not only for their ability to reach deep within themselves to overcome hardship and great odds, but because without exception they demonstrate high standards of character and dedication - they simply refuse to give up.

The stories in this book go far beyond basic survival. Each of these people has chosen to use their experiences to foster awareness, help others and create meaningful change in the world. This is an inspiring book and very easy to recommend.

The real life stories in this book all deal with the adversities of everyday life, growing up, going to school, being a parent etc. It also shows how everyday people have jumped the high hurdles in life that cripple many of us. For that reason these people are heroes. They are not celebrities or anyone you will read about in magazines or newspapers. They are just "normal people." But they've done extraordinary things.

This book is an excellent motivator! As corny as this may sound, it makes you say to yourself the words, "I can." It makes you realize that we all have the potential to be heroes to ourselves and to people around us. These well-written stories describe individuals who have overcome tremendous odds.

I had always assumed that heroism was reserved for the very few, but I no longer believe that to be true. I have come to believe that heroism is clearly attainable to each of us-that all we have to do to become heroes is, with God's help, to grow into the ideal each of us harbors in our hearts.

Every child or young man or young woman should know what a true hero looks like and ACTS like. It's not Michael Phelps with his pot smoking or Kanye West with his humiliating antics on stage with Taylor Swift. These guys aren't gentlemen and it's a pity that today's youth looks up to them. Read these stories aloud and let your hearts be touched with TRUE pictures of bravery, sincere self-sacrificing love, and humble honor. Our kids are in want of real heroes in this day and age. Give it to them through these stories.

I highly recommend this book to all. Thank you Hero's!

In the relation of the word to the world, I would sum this book up as a humanitarian masterpiece. There is a humanity to which we aspire and we understand how ordinary people make change in the world. How tremendous the power of commitment is.Reading this book is like reading almost 60 biographies in one book. One of my favorite quotes "God allowed me to step through the cracks" from James Everett, dubbed the Governor of Hip Hop. So many earthed and real stories give you an insiders view of the outsiders life. How human spirit rules!
When things happen, they usually happen in groups, but here we meet individuals who make a real difference. So, for me this book has a profound effect on the psyche. It is a celebration of resistance, the moments of altruism, something that is very beautiful, because it is strived for and hard won. The human spirit rises up in this revolution of ordinary people changing the world. The reader recognizes their own humanity in the bravery of others acts. They change our history and history is deep enough to hold us all. There are so many people I know who would love this book about the endeavors of ordinary people to make a difference in communities and the world. Ordinary citizens who combine compassion with rebellion to promote social change. People working for peace and doing random acts of kindness and love everyday. It is a journey of courage and commitment. The next best thing to reading this book, would be to shake hands with all these great people. And another book about people changing our world is The Compassionate Rebel: Energized by Anger, Motivated by Love

As a free market libertarian and defence policy specialist, I should have hated this book. Actually, I found it rather sweet and life-affirming.

The basic idea is to interview activists from in and around the Twin Cities, to find out how and why they do what they do. It came out a few years ago, so there are occasional parts that have dated (the introduction focusing on Obama's Hope and Change rings a tad hollow now that we're ducking and covering every two minutes in case a black-ops drone mistakes us for Edward Snowden - and I say this as someone who partied like it was 1999 when the guy got elected), but mostly it's interesting - personal enough to make the stories come alive whatever your politics.

My favourite chapters involved Bob - a Don Draper character who dropped out and became a hippy - and George - the "CEIEIO" (I actually adored that) of Organic Valley. Also, the electoral reform guys. My least favourite centered on Diana, a terrifyingly un-self-aware new ager ("There was no ego there; they were happy to let me lead.") who helped out after Hurricane Katrina and dedicated most of her section of the book to bitching about everyone - from her parents to her fellow relief workers to aid donors to Southerners in general.

Of course, any collection like this is going to be a mixed bag, and while I occasionally doubted the practical utility of individuals' contributions (one guy tells us that his art is his gift to the world - "Yeah. Thanks, man. It's just what we always wanted."), all in all I left feeling strangely upbeat. And, of course, if you've got lefty inclinations to start with, you should love it to bits.
