By Deb HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on August 27, 2012
Format: Paperback
Pip and all her friends were really excited because Field Day had finally arrived. Bun the bunny was doing stretches, Ted the hedgehog was pushing against a tree, Tab the cat was meditating, and Sox the fox was sitting on a bench gabbing away. Everyone was excited except for one critter and that was Peter the turtle. He peered around a tree and looked as if he was going to cry. There was a tree jump, a long hop, a dash, and even a speed roll, but there was absolutely nothing for Peter to do. Sox was going to enter the fun run, but everyone was surprised when Peter frowned and claimed that he wished he could race.

Sympathetic eyes were aimed in Peter's direction when he declared, "But I'll still have fun. I'll watch you from here. / You do your best. I'll clap and I'll cheer!" That would never do because there had to be something that a turtle could do. Tab, Sox, Ted, Pip, and Bun held hands and gathered around in a circle as they planned a race for Peter. After all it was a very special Field Day and everyone should be able to join in the fun. Peter sat on a bench with his hand on his chin. What could his friends plan for a very special friend so he wouldn't have to sit on the sidelines?

This is a heartwarming tale of how friends gather together to support another friend. Very often critters like Peter and children are left behind because others don't think of their needs. Children don't always think about hurt feelings or the needs of others, but tales such as this one encourage them to think about community and friendship. The brainstorming works wonders and the little twist at the end is just the perfect solution to Peter's dilemma.
