This book, providing literary descriptions and visual portrayals of the prayers and sacred rites of peoples around the world, will, I pray, benefit both children and parents regarding two of the most important topics for the world to consider today: on one hand, prayer, and on another, appreciation for both similarities and differences.

It is hard to produce a book on the diversity of the modes of prayer practiced in the world today. The first obstacle to overcome is exclusivism, which a book on the diversity of prayer like this obviously would and does. What is applaudable here is that this book's message circumvents another obstacle that is typically much more testing. Specifically, it goes beyond the limits of tolerance. If we can say that there is indeed something to appreciate in another's sacred experience and that, in this day and age, it is in fact necessary to do so, we can say that the limit of tolerance is that it does not necessarily involve any appreciation of the other. One can, or rather has to, tolerate a toothache when he or she has it. The limit that tolerance has in this context is obvious. What the the author does here is she instead guides the reader through a sincere appreciation for the other's sacred practices, thus going beyond both exclusivism and tolerance.

The next pitfall an author on this book's subject may be at risk of falling into is one that involves either syncretism or the dismissal of necessary differences. More specifically, the risk involves an all-too-easy-to-make, and quite dangerous, wish to find similarities at the expense of the realization (and thus, ironically, even the appreciation) of the differences between different traditions. The author and illustrator here are certainly far from doing so.

This book is a wonderful introduction to world religions and the culture of prayer. People from other places and cultures may seem different, but we may all share the diversity of our faith.
Full color illustrations on each page help open the door to inquiry. Symbols of each religion are shown on each page with a minimum of words; however, they clearly depict the situations and invite our discussions and questions.
People pray in different places, inside and outside. They pray with different objects, some pray quietly and other pray with dancing and singing. Some cover their heads, some do not.
Some pray when they are happy and some pray for solace when they are sad and seeking peace.
The symbols and explanations of various cultures/religions are explained on page twenty-seven. There is an explanation for what each is and who they follow. Learn about Jews, Christians, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, Jain and Shintoism.
Illustrations are explained on page twenty-eight with a complete listing of what each religious situation or location entails:
• Church, synagogue and mosque
• The purifying river of the Ganges
• The Golden Temple of India
• The statue of Gomateshvara Bahubali
• Shinto pilgrims
• Jerusalem Western Wall
• Maasai warriors of East Africa
• Quaran school to read the Muslim scriptures

"Everyone Prays" by Alexis York Lumbard

This is a most timely book. World Wisdom Books' Wisdom Tales Division is much to be congratulated on publishing it, for it addresses the question of what is it that is most urgently needed in this world of dissension and war? The answer, it tells us, is firstly, a recognition of the sadly overlooked fact that everyone believes in God (Jews, Christians, Muslims, Hindus, American Indians, etc.), and, secondly, by the fact that, as the title of this book puts it, "everyone prays". Alexis York Lumbard's text rises perfectly to this task.

This book is aimed at 4-8 year-olds. The intention is that the parent or adult will read it to the child, while the child will be attracted by the splendid color pictures by Alireza Sadeghian, which admirably portray the various religious communities at prayer. This early impression may linger for life-time, and the encounter of parent and child with this book surely constitutes an ineffaceable education.

It should be added that this book would also be useful for most adults.

There are lots of religions from around the world. Many of the followers who are bonded to their faith pray in one way or another. Young readers will learn about different religions, where the followers pray, the books they hold dear, and how they pray.

Young readers of all ages will enjoy learning that Christians, Jews and Muslims all pray. Some cultures pray in churches, or mosques and even temples. Some cultures pray with books, beads or candles. Water is often used in ceremonies too. People pray when they are happy and sad. Prayer is healing and can teach the heart the most precious light.

This enlightening tool is simplistic and perfect for any home library. Curious readers will learn about many types of religions and cultures along with illustrator notes that share a visual account of churches, synagogues and mosques. Teaching children to embrace the differences can also show what similarities we all share.
