I usually read a book once. There are very few that I've read more than once and only a handful that I've read more than twice. I'm on my fourth read of this amazing, raw, honest, earthy and very provocative book... I could not possibly recommend it highly enough. This makes two of Jade Sylvan's books that are on my multiple read list. I also love The Spark Singer. It is poetry that reads like prose. Kissing Oscar Wilde is the opposite and the books meet each other in very delightful ways. Both of them are also included on my very short list of the most memorable books I've ever read.

I love, love, love the rhythm and cadence of this author's voice! I mean, the story is written in prose, but it reads like poetry. Every beat is measured and never, never gets tired or stumbles. But - at least, it seems to me - she does it unintentionally, kind of like the way everything a dancer does, after they've worked in dance for a few years, becomes a form of dance, whether they are walking or talking or making a grilled cheese sandwich. And you can't help but dance along, through the landscape of France and in and out of encounters with people who each have their own way of shining and failing to shine, and into shadows but before you quite realize it's dark, you're back out on the other end where it's all OK again - maybe? And then you're on the last page and you wonder where the evening went, and you find yourself breathing a little more deeply than you used to think you could. OK I guess none of that makes any sense. But if you read it you'll know exactly what I mean!

Jade Sylvan's wondrous tour of the City of Lights (and Love) takes the reader through a voyage of discovery of self, love and life. Often the reader will find themselves being swept along by prose that is near poetic (and crosses the continuum from time to time). A delicious read to be enjoyed by all!

Jade piqued my interest with 'Backstage at the Carabou' and reeled me in with her poetry. And now, with her modern day memoir, I'm totally in love with her work. Jade tackles difficult subjects--such as gender, identity, and what it means to be an artist in modern times--exposing vulnerabilities to reveal a more honest truth. While there are no gimmicks, she has her own style and flair that allows us to examine her situations from unique angles. This is not only an important book for what it does for those who live within the fringe of societal 'norms', but it's an enjoyable, thought-provoking read.

Jade was the featured poet at a poetry event I often perform at. I was very impressed and made a point of following their work wherever it may lead. So here I am with Jade's memoir. Artist memoir's always run the risk of going out like Narcissus, so in love with their own reflection that they have no time for anything else. Artist memoir's that are specifically about coming to terms with being an artist are even more prone to this. Henry Miller, James Joyce and a handful of others have managed to avoid this pitfall, does Jade? I don't know, but I sure do dig that reflection myself.

Kissing Oscar Wilde revolves around Jade's two trips to Paris, and ritually kissing the monument on Wilde's grave. The act is at once an homage, a statement of identity, and perhaps a pose that needs to be overcome. This central event acts as a sounding board for both Jade's romantic entanglements and sense of self as an artist.

During a period of libertinage, following a year of unrequited love induced celibacy, I made a pilgrimage to the Messolonghi battlefield. I found the monument dedicated to Lord Byron, and made a burnt offering of the sole copy of what I believed was the best thing I'd written up to that point in time. I may not have much in common with Jade Sylvan, but we just may share a love of the grand gesture, a tendency toward self mythologizing, and a dedication to creating art.

I really loved this book. We follow the author's journey in this part memoir/part poetry/part play mix of styles as she wanders through France, her memories of love, & her relationship to art & youth & beauty on the cusp of 30. It's enchanting and engrossing, but may not be for someone who is looking for a straightforward memoir or plot, or has never wanted to be a poet adrift in France (which means you probably have no soul, but that's your deal).

This is a lovely memoir about becoming oneself and coming to terms with creativity, and how this is always both entirely stereotypical and utterly unfamiliar.

Sylvan takes us on her adventitious exploration of life, love and poetry. She gathers us into her world of love, wonder, "art marriage" and wanderlust. Sylvan finds herself, her strength and her voice as her tale unfolds! So amazing to read of her bravery to encounter a world on her terms, no holds bard!
