Having lived with an addict and understanding the addictive process I was drawn to this book. Mr. Lawford hits it on the head, and offers good advice for all of us. This is not a book for addicts, it is a book for how to live life well. I highly recommend it.

Coming from a family of addiction, the pain and suffering piece is clearly in place. WHAT ADDICTS KNOW offers a new perspective. The author does not glamorize addiction, but rather helps us see how the strength of recovery as a positive force in our lives. Not only does this work for the addict, but for all of us who hang around on the periphery of addiction and recovery.

This book gave me the big picture, looking from the addicts side of his battlefield. It gave me much more respect for the addicts who really want to come clean having to fight this addiction world of ours with their whole heart and soul, it's do or die. Now I can appreciate how easy we had it years ago compared to the rapid growing drug problem of today's world. I am a 72yr old grandmother witnessing my grandchildren fall into this trap. Our society can't afford the price of defeat for we all are addicts or come from families with addiction. I certainly would recommend this book to all parents and grandparents making them aware that we don't own our children they are on loan to us. We owe it to our children to learn all we can and in turn pass it to our children at a very young age before it's too late.

He gives us a look at the 12 steps that are synonymous with A.A. and N.A. meetings, which can be intimidating and even cultish to many folks. Including myself. He brings them out into the open and links scientific explanations and personal experiences to show us what is actually happening when folks use these tools to overcome addictions. Sometimes people are turned off ( myself again) by the religious overtones, the rigid recitation of the rules and inflexibility to new ideas.

I decided to give N.A. another shot after reading this book, and was surprised to learn that it can be a great way to get free group therapy while steering clear of the indoctrination and dogma. I'm not sure if the founders intended for it to become an old stuffy religion but it has, and this book would help change that view while bringing the 12 steps into the 21st century.

The book is easy to read - not technical, but I was hoping for a book to help understand addicts better. This book didn't do that. I do think it would be good for a recovering addict to read to see what skills they have learned and how to apply these skills to their "recovering life."
