I read a lot of true crime books and to be honest many are too dry -- like case studies. This book was written just the way I like. The reader is drawn into the story. The author captures the place and the people of this small Arkansas town in the early 1980s. The people are presented in a compassionate but factual manner. I would love to see more true crime books from this author. If you like true crime books with "heart" read this book!

I’ve read more true crime stories and books than anyone I know. I started with lurid magazines like True Detective, back when such things were unacceptable but not politically incorrect. We didn’t have political incorrectness then. We had tacky and low-class, which True Detective certainly was. I graduated from those to more sophisticated books such as Ann Rule’s The Stranger Beside Me, Joe McGinniss’s Fatal Vision, and Tommy Thompson’s Blood and Money.

Anita Paddock’s Blind Rage was not intended to be any of those, and people who criticize it because it isn’t need to revise their rigid views of what constitutes a true crime book. “True crime” is not limited to the journalistic kind of work some authors turn out. There have been many good true crime books written from a more personal perspective, and they, too, are excellent. In Cold Blood comes to mind—a true crime whose author became so intimate with his subject that his reporting of the events makes it seem as if were there.

I doubt that Ms. Paddock set out to one-up Truman Capote, something not many writers can do, but she has nevertheless followed in his footsteps by creating a narrative that brings the people and places alive. No, she wasn’t there for every conversation. No, she didn’t lay out the many police and legal documents that no doubt accompanied the murder and ensuing trial. That doesn’t mean this isn’t a true crime book.
Paddock's deep connection to the region and abiding respect for its denizens allows her to humanize the people involved in the life and death of Ruie Ann Park without absolving any of them of responsibility for their actions.

Would I have liked more detail on Ruie Ann Park and her children? Yes, I probably would.

This was a well written book that was about a murder in Van Buren Arkansas in 1981. I am from there and it was neat to read about people you knew and others that you knew about. As far as I can tell it is factually correct. I went to the author's presentation and book signing and I will go again just to hear the way she researched and wrote the book. I would highly recommend going to one of these presentations if the opportunity presents itself. I would call this book an easy read. I would say you probably can't put it down when you start it.

This is one of the best and most intriguing books I have read. I couldn't put it down. The author brought life to this story and I felt like I was there in the middle of the mystery. A must read.

Hollywood producers, take note: this book is on par with "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." The author brilliantly tells a compelling true-crime story, replete with the kind of quirky, southern characters that add depth and a touch of humor to the story. Ms. Paddock, please write another!

I really liked this book. It kept my attention from cover to cover and was so mesmerizing I couldn't put it down. Because I am an Arkansan I recognized many names and places. I'm old enough to remember this most interesting case and loved the way Ms. Paddock told the story.

A mysterious murder in a small Arkansas town. The person who everyone "knew" was the killer was suspected for no other reason than his lifestyle. However, because law enforcement assumed they had the killer, little was done to identify and apprehend the real murderer. After some time passes, due entirely to a divorce going from bad to worse, the actual killer is identified. Up to this point, this book is really good, with all the hallmarks of the best true crime books. However, once law enforcement identifies who actually committed the crime, the book just drips away. We are told that there is background information, but the story is not filled out. I felt like I was given a wonderful meal, but only allowed to smell it and not taste it. Is this all there is? Where is the motive other than the precipitating event? Why did the guilty party serve such a short prison term? Where is the background. There is some hinted at, but nothing in depth. The writing is certainly better than average for this type of book and moves quickly except for the inclusion of the entire tape recording where the murder is confessed. The story just bogs down at this point. Including a portion of the tape in the narrative and the entire tape as an appendix would have been much more effective. My disappointment is that this writer is so apparently capable of better work.
