My kids are in a Spanish immersion program at school. English is their first language but they learn in Spanish most of the day, and most of their homework is in Spanish. My 2nd grader was having a hard time with the meanings of some words in her homework, so I got her this dictionary to allow her to be more independent. Almost every word she has tried to look up hasn't been there.

To be fair, she loves the format and the pictures in the center of the book. But she needs something more comprehensive. I'm back on Amazon to purchase another Spanish/English dictionary for her, and it will probably be another Larousse, but the Student Edition is just too limited for my *2nd* grader!

Okay, I'll start off by saying that this is a NOT a complete dictionary. I'm not sure if the book itself makes it clear that it's a subset of commonly used words. It boasts 22,000 words and phrases. This is definitely less than the average adult's vocabulary. Therefore, if you're reading a book, you're not going to find all the words you need in it. So don't buy it as a comprehensive dictionary.

What it does do is take a pared down vocabulary and provide a very thorough dictionary for those words. The thing I appreciate most, as an intermediate Spanish student, is the examples! Just about every word or phrase has a short example of its usage, using common words; an English translation is provided along with the Spanish. This is extremely useful for someone like me, who isn't entirely confident on how to string words together into a sentence. It's also useful to get an idea of which translation you need, when one word can have multiple translations.

The dictionary is well laid out, and the font is pleasing. There's enough whitespace to make things easy to read, which is nice in a dictionary. Also helpful is the 62 common verbs that are translated in the back of the dictionary. Other than that, and the color inset on different categories of words and a basic guide to pronunciation, you're not going to find any 'extras' about grammar usage or the like here. Oh, there are '200 informative notes' which weren't that exciting to me. They either explained things that were pretty obvious (like when words were 'false cognates') or had some random cultural note, which were few and far between and thus just seemed odd.Read more ›
