I admire the conceptual rigor of this project, and also the elegance of its execution: as an exact reproduction of the architect's working sketchbook, this little volume demonstrates the role sketching play's in Souto de Moura's practice. The printing is crisp and stark, the design of the book is very subtle and intelligent. An appendix on a natural-colored stock explains the project's genesis and execution, and lists the projects that the architect was exploring on each page. Still, it's not a truly satisfying addition to one's bookshelf, mostly because the contents don't feel all that - ahem - illustrative (in any sense). Souto de Moura seems to draw with an ink ball pen with a thick line, which lends itself to quick, gestural work, and the sketches in this book are hasty and generally unlovely, even crude. Fair enough, they are private explorations of ideas in progress, many of which would doubtless be discarded. Nonetheless, not enough of the spreads document anything like a real architectural idea, or even anything visually pleasing to study. Instead, spread after spread lovingly reproduce mostly blank expanses of white, some with a few rough stabs at a detail or form and maybe, in a corner, a fax number or some basic arithmetic calculations. Some pages, full of hastily scribbled notes, might prove to be of interest to readers who have a good grasp of written Portugese, but for anyone else, they don't provide much interest beyond getting a look at the architect's handwriting and method of organizing sentences and paragraphs.

Although it's a moderately handsome object, I think most architects and lay readers will be disappointed with "Sketchbook No. 76." It might be useful to a handful of academics or appeal to Souto de Moura fetishists (if there is such a thing). I hope the companion volume by Sou Fujimoto will be more interesting.
