This is the catalogue accompanying the exhibition of the same name at the de Young Museum in San Francisco from January to June 2013, a show put together from the vast collection of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, enriched by a few loans from private collectors. The catalogue's sole author is James A. Ganz, the curator of the collection and a distinguished art historian who has previously written on a range of topics from the San Francisco photographs of Arthur Tress to Impressionist Paris. In this book, Dr. Ganz has marshaled a very diverse body of material into thematic categories, each of which is given a chapter: self-portraits, portraits, natural history prints, everyday life, landscapes, history (including mythological and religious art), and what he calls the "art of darkness," i.e., dark engraving and etching, mezzotint, and in general the legacy of Caravaggio. All over Europe in the seventeenth century, and especially in the United Provinces during "The Golden Age," huge numbers of prints were produced, traded and actively collected. Rembrandt produced almost three hundred prints himself and was surely the most influential graphic artist of the time, so he is rightly put at the center of the survey. His sources, the work of contemporary professional printmakers and of other painters working in graphic media, and the responses to his art by his followers are also considered. The main focus is on Dutch printing, but there is also much material from France, Italy, and England. There are 131 illustrations reproduced with excellent clarity and on very fine paper, and each chapter opens with a full-page detail of one of its prints. Dr. Ganz's discussion is lucid and unfailingly illuminating.Read more ›
