The tittle of this book suggests that you'll be reading a love story, but the actual "love" theme is not the focus of the book. Death is. I liked the book but I was expecting it to have a little bit more story. The plot is really simple, but it seems that the plot is the excuse to share the reflections and deep thoughts of the characters about love and death. Althought those "deep thoughts" are interesting, sometimes I felt like it was too much and maybe too artificial. I had trouble believing that certain character would have those kinds of thoughts or deepness in their actions. In general, thought, it is a good read.

Lo mejor de esta novela es la forma en la que está escrita:
El argumento para mi gusto simple y lento...
Javier Marias es uno de mis escritores favoritos, un verdadero maestro. Tiene una calidad y un lenguaje inmejorable.
Pero este libro en muchas ocasiones me parece un ensayo filosófico sobre la vida, la muerte y las relaciones de pareja. Los planteamientos filosóficos del autor son tan extensos que se llega a perder el hilo argumental de la novela. Aun así le doy casi un 10 por la forma de escribir del autor, que desde el comienzo te embelesa, aunque realmente se pierda el sentido del contenido.

Me quito el sombrero ante Javier Marias y su libro "Los Enamoramientos". Qué manera de analizar la muerte, el amor, las relaciones y el proceso reflexivo. Es de esos libros que lees muy rápido la primera vez, para saber qué pasa, y con calma la segunda o tercera para subrayar y analizar todo lo que dice. Vale muchísimo la pena.

Not to be read on the beach or in airports. Should be read with enough time and with no interruptions so as to enjoy every page of it. Not for best-seller lovers, but for those who really appreciate good, serious literature.

This book is deep and fascinating, but grim. Like Camus' The Stranger, Los Enamoramientos is laid out with a brilliant calm, but none of the characters finds a warm place in your heart. You will be compelled forward inexorably page by page, chapter by chapter, and in the end you will be older and wiser.

Magnífica novela del escritor José Marías no sólo muy bien lograda por su disfrutable y lúcida prosa (forma) que comunica de manera extraordinaria la esencia de los personajes, sino también por la trama (contenido) de la historia. Los enamoramientos es un relato de intrigas, amores no correspondidos, secretos, crimen, traición--la vida y la muerte. Su narradora, María Dolz, nos presenta una versión más realista del amor o de nuestras relaciones sentimentales vividas a través de sus propias experiencias y de lo que observa, reflexiona y deduce de los que la rodean (narrador omnisciente) . El amor que inicialmente observa entre la pareja del café, Luisa y Miguel y que idealiza, quizá con algo de envidia y que ve como la situación perfecta, cambia abruptamente cuando se entera del brutal asesinato de Miguel. María, la editora casi sin querer se ve involucrada en una maraña de sentimientos enmarcados por la bajeza y la ruindad. Algunos de los temas abordados incluyen: La traición a un amigo, el inevitable reemplazo de los seres queridos que mueren a nuestro alrededor, Las dudas y el miedo a enfrentar las consecuencias de indagar y sacar a luz la verdad optando a cambio por un silencio fácil y encubridor, y la búsqueda para lograr el amor, que es un sentimiento positivo y noble, pero que termina por justificarlo todo, sin importar a quien se atropella para lograrlo. Muy recomendable.

The idea of the permanence of the dead in a couple after that person dies, is an interesting one, but in this case the issue described in the first one third of the book is too slow and repetitive. The analogies with Honore de Balzac and The three musketeers stories are well done but repeated in many instances. The best part of the book relates to the part when Javier, the main male character describes the death of his best friend Miguel to Maria the main female character. There is tension and intrigue but only in one chapter. This book is entertaining but did not fulfill my expectations.
