Timed with the centennial of the beginning of the great tragedy of WW I, this
graphic history reminds me of the old "Classics Illustrated" comics that I remember
so fondly. No new info but a really nice telling of the history using graphic arts/comics style.
It would be a good way to make teaching about the horrors of WW I to young readers easier.
Sadly, the mistakes that led to WW I have been repeated and the world the Treaty of Versailles
created haunts us still--you need only look at Iraq and the the whole Middle East to see this.

I just received this comic, and I have To say that I am gravely disappointed.
Let me first state that I was about to embark on a big, heavily illustrated project regarding WW1, so I bought every book, historical reference, and any comic that did engage this particular era. Therefore, I am talking strictly out of an artistic view. I did not read this comic yet, therefore my following critique is to the art, coloring, and direction.
When I have read it,I will update my comment and include my input about the story telling.

1- Line art-wise: The artist is a good one, I have visited his deviantart.com page, and I do give him that; he is a good one. HOWEVER, in this comic it was obvious that his work was Mc'Art, he did some amazing pages, which are rather few in this book, but the rest of the pages he did a horrible, fast, sluggish work, as if he had a deadline to do 10 pages per day. The art was little more than scribbles, the shapes of the probes was a little more than geometric suggestions of what on earth is supposed to be instead.
The soldier's cloths, tools, trenches, rifles, surroundings, helmets, weapons and armored vehicles suggest that the artist did not trouble himself too much in doing any form of decent research beyond watching a few ww1 movies at BEST, trusting that the readers wouldn't be any wiser.
It was so obvious that he didn't do the project out of any love, the dude just wanted to get paid and get done with it. You can find the stark contrast when you read and see illustrated stories like the following, which were made with a high artistic feeling, and respect to the project they worked on:
a. Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths - By: Mizuki, Shigeru
b. It Was the War of the Trenches - By: Tardi, Jacques
c. Goddamn This War!

My first graphic novel. I am also a history buff. This tells the history of WWI in a simple to understand but no less thorough way. The images are beautiful and horrifying. Even my father (80) loved it. Great way to learn about history. I'll buy more graphic novels dealing with history.

I think this is a great way to educate the young 'uns on history. The comic style illustrations are colorful, attractively drawn and will draw any inquisitive reader, young and old to it's storyline. Kudo's to the illustrator Kumar Sharma- better than most other's I've seen. Highly recommended graphic novel!

Alan Cowsill tries to do the impossible, to tell the, often complicated, often convoluted, first world war from its beginning in 1914 to its end in 1918. Cowsill tries to do this from both scholar’s point of view, and the common soldier’s.

The scholar’s viewpoint is represented in the form of various infodumps that pepper this book’s narrative, more often than not the main narrator’s story cold to tell us something that gives us important information on the war. Important stuff perhaps, but it makes George Smith’s story a choppy one.

And it is clear that the soldier’s and the nitty-gritty of the first World War is told through the character of George Smith, who in the beginning of this graphic novel lies to his draft board to enlist in the British Expeditionary Force. And while he is this graphic novel’s main character, there will be side trips to tell some vignettes of such people like Joseph Smith, George's older brother, and Khudadad Khow of India’s 129th’s Baluchis. It is here that this book’s infodumps help us understand their viewpoints.

Cowsill manages to inform us, then gloss over such things as the “Massacre of the Innocents” in Ypres, 1915’s Christmas Peace, the “Battle Of The Falklands”, the war’s first gas attack, the first use of flamethrowers, the first use of tanks, the sinking of the LMS Lusitania, the Battle Of Hooge, the slaughter at Gallipoli, etc. All while not really getting any real detail about any of these things, and this novelization still manages to not tell us just how important the influenza plague was at ending the war.

World War One: 1915-1918 is a well researched historical graphic novel recounting the War To End All Wars from the perspective of two British soldiers. Their stories are chronologically interspersed with major events/battles as well as tales from other soldiers. The book is well done and gives a very manageable view of its subject.

The ratio between historical event to personal story is 50-50. We'll follow George and Joe, foot soldiers, but also learn about naval battles, airmen, even the animals involved in the war. Interesting anecdotes, including the white feathers of cowardice given out by women at home, gassing of troops, introduction of tanks, even Lawrence of Arabia are interspersed throughout the storytelling.

The author does a great job of giving a face to the war. As well, the pulp-style illustrations suit the subject matter well. That the guys are a bit too 'super her buff' would probably be my only complaint. I'd not expect a common soldier farmer to have ripped pecs and tight shirt when he pulls out a knife. The size of the book is very manageable - not too much but also the right size to be satisfying.

In all, this is a great resource to both learn more about Great War and enjoy personal stories from the soldiers who fought. Note that this is heavily focused on Britain's involvement so you won't find much about Australians, Americans, Germans, Russians, or French here.
