From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up-In this novel by Lurlene McDaniel (BDD, 1997), Leah spends her summer working in a bed and breakfast inn rather than sailing to Fiji with her mother and her latest husband. The inn is near the home of an Amish family who befriended her while she was in the hospital being treated for bone cancer in this novel's prequel, Angels Watching Over Me (BDD, 1996). Leah has a special fondness for the son, Ethan. The story develops along the theme of two teenagers trying to create a bridge between two very different cultures. Will Leah be able to assimilate to the Amish culture, or will Ethan be willing to leave his own lifestyle? The choices are difficult and the pressures from family are strong. This emotional novel will appeal most to teenage girls who can identify with the culture clash. The characters are realistic, and the problems they face will be understood by most teenagers. Actress Kate Forbes is an interesting reader who doesn't use different voices, but it is easy to tell which character is talking. Between the descriptive passages and the voice of Kate, listeners can imagine the scenes in the mind's eye. This novel provides an interesting, thought-provoking look at the life of Amish teenagers and the issues they face in relationships with teenagers outside their tight knit community.-Sandra L.
