Format: Audio CD
This is an excellent example of loud style gamelan music, played by the members of Yogyakarta Royal Palace orchestra. There are four tracks, 2 Ladrangs, a gendhing and a long dance suite. Both pelog and slendro scales are represented. Producer David Parsons has caught the different instruments of the gamelan well on this CD, and apart from being beautiful music, it is very useful to study if you are learning Gamelan yourself. For example Imbal technique and changes of irama are easily heard. The third track, some 30 minutes long, blends vocal and soft instruments, and snare drums and western brass instruments. I've never heard anything like it, but it works surprisingly well! The CD booklet is up to Celestial Harmonies usual standard, and is full of useful information and pictures. Check out their "music of Cambodia" series too.

My new favorite Javanese gamelan album. The sound is beautiful and the instruments sound distinct. This is an especially nice CD for introducing newcomers to Javanese gamelan because of the straightforward style. (Long sections of rebab and/or female vocalists are an insurmountable barrier to many people.) I know I will listen to this CD countless times.
