Ace records does very well with an artist who never went beyond local fame in Houston, TX. Quality of performance and sonic production values vary from track to track. Hop Wilson was obviously influenced by Elmore James, but a lap steel guitar, played with a slider "bar" works differently from a standard guitar played with a tube slider on the finger, so the licks come out differently. At worst, he's a little out-of-tune on some pedestrian blues material. At best, he brings some inspired and interesting blues phrasing to these local studio recordings.

Wilson was not the lap steel virtuoso I might have hoped he would be, but he generally plays well, with a good sense of phrasing and economy. Playing with a steel bar on a guitar that's basically a slab of wood with strings is tricky, but the extra sustain and pitch play the bar gives a player is put to good use on many cuts, most in the vein of Texas blues. It's raw and occasionally very exciting. Several fast and medium-tempo boogies make the collection worth picking thru, and if you get a chance to download individual cuts, I would recommend: "Dance To It," "Chicken Stuff (released version)," "Rockin' With Hop," "You Don't Move Me No More," "Why Do You Twist," and "Toot Toot Tootsie," which sounds nothing like the Tin Pan Alley standard; instead, it's a kicking little boogie number.

Hop's an OK singer, not great, but he does have a little vocal help from time to time-- Fenton Robinson, local TX legend, sings a couple, and a couple of other singers help out as well. The band backing varies, as this generous collection compiles work from several different studio dates, including outtakes of varying quality.

Hop is the real deal. He sings with such gut honesty I feel his curse cause his baby has a black cat bone mojo on him, or his resignation yet hint of hope as he wishes the lover who left him merry Christmas. And the bar rockers are flat out fun. Plus you get his beautiful and tasteful laptop steel playing. I have loads of blues recording and over and over again, I return to hear Hop more than about any other. He didn't set out to be a blues singer, he just plays and sings about his life. Totally compelling. Oh to have had more!

what can i say....i love HOP WILSON...
what a talent...smooth soulful vocals....his steel guitar blues technique is utterly unique...full bodied sound..
he does not use the pedals....he uses a massive Gibson Console Steel guitar......about 25 pounds of
maple deliver some very smooth tones..
this stuff is addictive....
its loose and sometimes sloppy but not in a bad way..
this is real music played by real men...

Steel Guitar Flash!

If you want very Talented and Real Blues then I highly Suggest this CD. The are very few people in the same League as Hop Wilson. If you are interested in The Blues, then give Hop Wilson a Listen.
