Like most "Best of" collections, this one should rather be entitled "A Representative Selection of". It's not that the tracks are bad, but there are others that have a far better claim to inclusion.

This compilation does have one unique distinction, however: it contains three tracks from the band's second album, Selected Jigs Reels and Songs, which has never been issued on CD, and as I understand never will be, because the master tapes have been lost!

I transferred my LP to CD long ago; but unless you can do the same, or if you want CD audio quality, then the only way you can get these tracks is to buy the present album!

The tracks concerned are:

The Flowers of Spring/Jackie Small's Jig
The Banks of the Quay/Crucaharan Cross
O'Carolan's Draught

The last-named in particular really does belong on a "Best of".

I am a great fan of traditional Irish music and De Danaan is the band that started me down that road....over 25 years ago, gasp!! I remember buying the Mist Covered Mountain when I was no more than 10 or 11 and listening to the LP on the turntable every evening with my brothers. Those were great evenings, filled with laughter and games, music both haunting and evocative; even as I write this my memories turn to how I would drift to sleep, my brothers quiet about me (we three shared a room), thinking thoughts about the fabled Emerald Isle that I could know only through this wonderful new music. I went on to purchase other De Danaan albums, and many other albums by other traditional Irish bands. This album is a great compilation of some of their better tunes, culled from their many albums over the years. This is great stuff and if you are a fan of this type of music this is one you'll want to add to your collection.

This attractive and entertaining program of Irish music is let down by insecure pitch on tracks 1, 3, 6-7, and 10-12. Could it be a faulty disc? Could it be tape damage? I dunno. All I know is, I hear pitch changes on these tracks, and I don't think the musicians or my playback equipment is responsible. Despite the pitch changes, I get caught up in the music every time I listen to it. I think the performances are wonderful. Maybe the best way to listen to them is on vinyl?
