Please be aware. This cd has a lot of beautiful music but it is the most disappointing of the Celtic Christmas series of cds from Windham Hill. The two big issues are that there is not much music here that is associated with Christmas or Winter. Also the cd, when listened to from start to finish is sort of depressing. It badly needs one or two shots of joy and celebration. The only uplifting moment is SWEENY'S BUTTERMILK, part of Song #10.

But I give it four stars because it has Capecaille, Mairghead Ni Domhnaill, Carlos Nunez, Nightnoise and James Galway and plenty other favourite Celtic artists.

Apart from Galway's rendition of THE WEXFORD CAROL, there is very little else associated with the season here. In fact the songs deal with the Irish famine, defeat in battle, lament, cruel landlords; not very cheery topics. The first Celtic Christmas cd had its share of slow tracks but they had titles like THE WINTER'S END, SNOW ON HIGH GROUND, WE FOLLOW A STAR, CHRISTMAS EVE and evoked an atmosphere of resting by a warm fire indoors on a cold Irish night.

Individually, most of the tracks are wonderful and the album does start off in a very seasonal atmosphere with CHANONRY POINT (Phil Cunningham & Manus Lunny), AMANACEER (DAWN)from Carlos Nunez and THE WEXFORD CAROL (James Galway). Nightnoise's BRID OG NI MHAILLE follows and is very beautiful but the feeling sets in that the album needs an uplifting track. I honestly do not care for Luka Bloom and his contribution LISTEN TO THE RIVER could have been left off. The same goes for AFTEER AUGHRIM'S GREAT DISASTER by Triona Ni Dhomhnaill, two tracks that I skip over.

The two best tracks are THE STAR OF COUNTY DOWN/SWEENY'S BUTTERMILK/JENNY'S CHICKENS and I'LL ROCK YOU TO REST.

I am quoting from the titles of two of the songs on this beloved Christmas CD. I've had two or three copies of this, which somehow seem to be left at other people's houses-I'm not whinging and never returned, I've given out many copies for gifts, too. Of all the Celtic Christmas CD and Narada/Windham Hill Seasonal compilations this is my go-to, favourite, the one that gets packed and moved. My friend, the Rabbit, sent up a distress signal when his copy of it was lost and he couldn't remember which one it was. But, we are all different, as others may prefer another volume. For me, turn on the Christmas tree lights, put this on CD player and snuggle up in front of the fireplace-that's what Christmas is all about.

This is my single favorite Christmas album, EVER. It's not aggressively Christmas-y, avoiding the feeling of the same tune going around and around and around in your head, while still evoking a calm, joyful feeling - like the quiet moment when you're the first one up in the morning to find snow falling quietly outside and a warm cozy indoor day ahead.

I can listen to it again and again - I know one reviewer said they find it depressing, but I think "low key" is more to the point than "low mood." These aren't dancing tunes - they are more suited to quiet activity and reflection, which for me is a big part of celebrating and loving my family and friends through the cold and dark of winter.

It's also quite nice if you want something that's a little less intensely CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS JESUS CHRISTMAS for a more pluralistic celebration, or a gathering of people who are more interested in seasonal patterns than the particular religious origins of Christmas.

This is not an American Christmas recording so don't expect it to be so. We have had Celtic Christmas 3 for a number of years and love it. This one is lacking in interest, the songs drag and my husband turned it off before the CD was over. so cannot fully recommend it.

Celtic music is a favorite of mine and I love to "mix it up" with either either listening music year round or mix it with other traditional holiday music. This is a great album in that I will be able to use it year around and enjoy the sound.
Thank you!

Didn't like this CD at all. Not one song was even vaguely familiar, and it certainly didn't sound like it had anything to do with Christmas. Not a happy camper, I listed it right up for sale as soon as I played it once. Still hasn't sold.
