Start Today is one of the best hardcore albums period. It had just the right amount of melody mixed with anger and positivity. Lyricly maybe not groundbreaking but they still did things a little different and a song like, Things We Say made kids think about the way they treat people. I found this album just a bit after it came out and was in high school and feeling like an outcast because I didn't think the same things as all the other kids and this was one of those albums that make you feel not so alone in the world. This album was like a breath of fresh air when it came out and for all the people that hate on it, there's a reason that this album was instrumental in introducing so many kids to hardcore. although I question some of their intentions these days i'm looking forward to seeing them on the reunion tour and finally getting the chance to pig pile and shout these songs. Highly reccomend it.

This album is second only to minor threat's first album in terms of it being a classic. Positive, fast, and inspriring hardcore! This is true hardcore before metal ruined hardcore (well not really, but this is the way it was meant to be!).

In spite of the years, this album is still a must have to me... Gorilla Biscuits was a very original band with a very short career (but so intense...). Simply said, GB was unique and sounded differently than the others... "Start Today" is a clear evidence of that. It is rough and full of energy. Having some FUN and displaying POSITIVITY all around seemed to be the main motto of these guys. So, let's start today...

5 star album, every song brings an amazing, barely two-minute explosion of punx.

I purchased this album in high school and the fact that it was my first official Hardcore Punk album I ever sought out definitely shaped my musical taste and passion for aggressively optimistic and forthright music. That purchase was well over 10 years ago, too.

Every song is wonderful. I don't feel I can say the same about the other releases by GB but not only is it true for START TODAY, the 1989 release by Gorilla Biscuits (their second release). They all feature the pivotal themes of late 80s Youth Crew HC (fast and way more punk than current HC -- this isn't a knock on current HC which I also enjoy).

Tracks like THINGS WE SAY, TWO SIDES, FIRST FAILURES and CATS AND DOGS particularly stick out to me - with the title song being the weakest--ONLY if I had to chose a wing song.

A Hardcore Punk masterpiece.

NB: If you like this album then still check out the rest of the GB discog, but also check out the other great Youth Crew HC bands that became popular in the late 80s/early 90s on the East Coast, like YOUTH OF TODAY or FLOORPUNCH.

ESPECIALLY check out CIV - SET YOUR GOALS and DAG NASTY (though the singer has cleaner vocals).

Some newer bands to check out would be CHAMPION and a little of LIFE LONG TRAGEDY and IN MY EYES. Some good non-English bands would be THE GEEKS (Korean) and maybe even ENDZWECK (Japan). Finally, the classic joke band GOOD CLEAN FUN would probably be right up your alley...though I'd imagine if you already have GB then you'd heard of at least one of these bands!

fo real. i am saying this now after owning this cd for 12 yrs. this is just some catchy, not your run-of-the mill (thank you walter!) hardcore. like many of its peers, it has an appeal to those individuals who find it important to stay true to yourself. the album is not "a call to arms" as one hapless person put it. they do endorse straightedge on one song, and vegetarianism on another (cats and dogs) but not in a hardline way. they are actually one of the most positive and open minded hardcore bands to emerge from that scene. (as well as youth of today and well most of them really) they want people to give each other a chance, they want people to be who they are, they want people to stop fighting, start loving. its not to far off from what many hippies in the sixties believed. (as radically different as they are) but with the gorila biscuits there is an urgency to this message. we need to start today. the hippies have great ideals, but they are too lax to make change, these kids have aggresion, they wont sit around, they'll scream it out loud in hopes that people are listening. now hopefully you'll get it and love it, like i and so many other have... the music is fast punk with great NYC hardcore breakdowns. wally is a great musician then and now (check quicksand and rival schools) and civ is just a your angry teen spouting his anger at societies collapse. biddip bo!

looking back at everyone else's review i dont think i can add much except a defense to someone's calling this a call to arms. 14 tracks plus one hidden and i can only recall one track that actually mentions the bands choice to be straight edge so i cannot see how this messege was pounded into anyone's head. perhaps if the listener took more time to look up the lyrics (as i did to make sure i was correct)rather than spend time slamming this album he would have seen that this messeges here are nothing but postive. i mean songs like first failure, things we say, competion, and new direction, how could you even think for a minute that this album would send people storming through the streets jumping people. like i said before this album is a milestone and my personal favorite album so i recommend it to anyone and everyone.
